I've always felt different for being a girl who has liked other girls. I've had so many experiences, some good, some bad. This anime almost perfectly represents how I have felt throughout my life. Yuu is one of the most relatable characters I have ever seen.
I may just be an emotional person, but I cried nearly every episode of this anime. The way the story was told and how much it resonated with me made me feel something. It was so beautiful. It accurately depicts how it can feel to love someone of the same gender, not being sure how to deal with it, and being unsure of your own feelings.
If you're a girl who likes girls, questioning, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, or just someone looking for a cute yet emotional anime, I recommend Bloom Into You. And if you're looking to get into the gl genre, this is a great place to get started.
While I watched Bloom Into You, I was going through a similar situation. I was in love with my best friend, another girl, and it was amazing just as much as it was scary. I wanted to let this girl into my heart, but I was so hesitant. I wasn't sure why it was so hard for me. I really liked her, but I was so worried and I didn't understand entirely what I wanted. I think she felt a similar way.
I couldn't help but think of myself as Yuu and my friend as Touko throughout the show. It helped clear up some of my confusion and made me realize that what was happening to me was okay. It didn't matter that she was a girl, I liked her and she liked me. What was wrong with that?
On a note unrelated to my personal experiences, the whole plot and representation are so great. Not only do we get to see lesbians, we see other LGBTQ+ identities that are less common in media. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't give any names or plotlines out, but I really enjoyed seeing an aromantic character. That is something seen less often in media, especially anime.
A lot of gl anime is made purely for the male gaze or just entirely sexual. That's not entirely a bad thing (though it depends), but after so much of that, it's nice to see an anime that really is just the struggle of finding out more about yourself and your sexuality. I think a lot of people appreciated that.
Watching Yuu and Touko's story made me feel so much better about what was going on in my life. And I'm so glad I found Bloom Into You when I did. I think this anime will continue to help LGBTQ+ people for as long as people are watching it.
PS, if you are unsatisfied with the ending of the anime and want more (because I know I did) I definitely think you should read the manga! It's just as beautiful.
There are also anthologies and a light novel series focusing on one of the side characters, so those are great too if you want even more Bloom Into You content!
Thanks for reading my review, I hope it helped. <3
