Unfortunately, she gets caught up in commuter rush and gets lost. Luckily, a boy named Shima Sousuke helps her out (who, then, becomes her classmate).
My Review
It is a simple but good plot. There's a lot of potential plot points to be explored here, such as how Mitsumi will deal with this new environment, trying to fit in, etc.
She's from the countryside who moves to the city, just from this alone, there may be differences in lifestyles that she'll have to adjust to. Also, she's from a depopulated area, Tokyo having a lot much more will allow Mitsumi to meet new people that may accompany her on the way.
Overall, I think it's a simple but sweet kind of story.
My Review
I think regarding the plot, the school setting (especially a high school one) is perfect for the story.
Not only Mitsumi is growing up, being a teenager and all, but she used to be from a depopulated area - Tokyo having a lot of people will have her meet a bunch of people that could become her friend and spend time with.
Showing places other than the school is also a good way to show the progression of these characters' relationships amongst them, these moments may be simple, but they are truly meaningful.
Iwakura Mitsumi is a girl from the countryside who moves to Tokyo. She has aspirations of helping her community with its depopulation.
Shima Sousuke is a nice person who is kind to everyone, but doesn't show his true feelings and has an elusive side. He is the first friend Mitsumi makes after he helps her out on the first day of school regarding the entrance ceremony.
My Review
The characters themselves are great and can stand on their on as individuals, each of them have something that's unique to them and gives them depth.
Mitsumi has her drive, hard work and ambitions in helping her community. She's inspiring and an easily lovable character.
Shima is kind to everyone, but he also doesn't show his true feelings - he's quite a mystery, but also a people pleaser at the same time. A character that has depth and eventually will be unraveled as the story progresses.
I may not have mentioned the other characters here, but they're great! Each have their moments to shine and they all feel like individuals that really have their own personality.
These characters maintain their core self whilst also improving from it, the change isn't drastic that it feels rushed - but natural in the sense that people don't just do a whole 180.
Certain scenes can be subtle with it but also speak so much about the characters, and the development isn't just a 'one arc' thing but really progresses throughout the story.
Needless to say, they're adorable. Their relationship is wholesome, sweet and they both respect each other. It's a healthy relationship that allows both characters to grow and inspire each other in many ways. It's always a treat to see them together on a scene!
Whilst I may not have mentioned the rest of the cast, all of them have good relationships with Mitsumi that are well-written and the kind that really makes you feel that they have a bond and such. It's, overall, wholesome and sweet.
You'll be seeing more character-centered conflicts, is what I'd say, each and every character have their own stuff to deal with - and the story handles it very maturely.
It never feels frustrating (from my experience at least) because you can understand where these characters are coming from, and it all gets resolved in a mature way as well.
All in all, you don't have to worry about being frustrated about a character, about what they do, or other stuff - it all gets resolved in a way that is well-written and satisfying.
Every lesson you can get from this story is subjective to how you see it, the story is not just wholesome but also very aware of itself - it's mature in its themes but reminds people that it's okay to not restrict yourself at times.
Everything suits what's presented in the scene, I especially like it even more when the situation is more "quiet moment" where you... just really take all the scenery and moment in within the story.
It also suits the "quiet moment" I mentioned earlier in SOUNDS, like on the end of an episode where it might show a background, the sun, etc.
Overall, it's great and adjusts itself to suit the situation as well.
The development, characters, visuals - just everything about this series has nailed these things. It doesn't feel like anything was a "missed opportunity" (in my opinion).
Definitely one of my favorite animes.
If you like more action types or others... still, you could try it - I did, and I liked it. You may end up liking it or not, but the story is worthwhile.
