This review contains spoilers. However, these spoilers don't have a curse, unlike what the Abyss brings.
Made in Abyss is an anime about cute people diving into a place called the Abyss, with it's cute art style it may trick you into watching something that has a lot of dark stuff waiting for us in the Abyss, so let's dive in and explore the world of this anime..
Riko is just a child in the orphanage until one day where she finds a human robot named Reg, after spending time with him in her home, they decide to go to the titular Abyss, where each layer brings a curse that gets more intense when you go down more into it.
This series ain't your cute anime like it does, it shows how scary and traumatizing the Abyss is. Every journey for these two have them find the Curse of The Abyss while danger is lurking around them, such as dangerous creatures that could eat you alive, and flower gardens that aren't whimsical but creepy, making for one wild ride of an anime.
First of all, Riko and Reg are a great duo, despite the trauma they have to go through. They still make it through in the end, searching for what lies in the Abyss and beyond. With them facing their fears as they go down even further and further.
Along the way, they meet a few folks on their journey, such as Bondrewd, who I could describe as Shou Tucker all over again, but I digress. But in Ep. 11, they meet Nanachi to help Riko get cured of her horrifying pain of her body, and trust me, Nanachi is cute. She also has a partner named Mitty, a cute critter with another traumatizing backstory to boot.
Once again, don't be fooled by the art style, this is a show with a lot of body horror, and it shows. Seeing all of these cute characters suffer is a horrifying experience for who was expecting something fun and happy. But despite all of it, you want feel bad for what these adorable characters have to go through.
There's a lot of nightmare fuel in the show and it even makes the show better but has it filled with it all the time, including Riko's infamous body horror moment in Ep. 11, where she suffers so much she freaks out, and it ain't pretty..
The OP and ED for the show have a happy vibe, making a mood shift between what you just seen between the two explorers and their journeys. But still, it brings on a happy tone and shows all of Riko and Reg's journeys in a light-hearted way. In fact, the OP is just them singing together without no trauma in sight.
I got to say, Made In Abyss is kind of a great anime, showing off how far the Abyss is and how despite all the things in here that are quite dark, it shows how the explorers can face these curses while in the Abyss. And the nightmare fuel cranks up with each episode, starting off calm and gentle but by the end, you feel shock from what you just saw, yet show remorse for all who through so much pain throughout it.
If you want something cute, but different in tone, this anime shows it off quite well. This stands out from the rest of the anime that has a soft art style by showing how much intense it could get. It's a good anime by my standards, but at least if you went through it, you must been scared, but awed by how much the Abyss holds in it's infinite layers.
