I really felt Frieren is one series that I will treasure in my heart. After watching episode by episode, I feel more confident to say that this show is really well-written. The writing feels really fresh from the premise and how they go on from there.
The story begins after Frieren and her party beat the Demon King, in which they completed their adventure. As an elf with a thousand years of lifespan, soon enough, Frieren will be the only living legend from the well-renowned party. Frieren sets out to go on a new adventure as a part of her former comrades request.
Even though we don't see the full story of the past adventures, you can see how Frieren really treasured the time that she had with her former comrades. The storytelling goes back and forth in each episode, where we can see a glimpse of heartfelt, warm, and fun moments in Frieren's past adventures, and it really gives perspective on how Frieren became the elf she is in the present. You can see how her relatively short 10-year adventure with her former comrades really shaped the thousand-year-old elf. The difference in perspective of time really adds depth to Frieren's character, along with the group of adventurers that traveled with her and had an impact on her life.
Throughout the show, you can see that every character, aside from Frieren, is very notable and interesting. Each of the characters has remarkable traits, as well as their own values and motivations, that we can feel invested in. I don't feel like any of them follow typical fantasy anime characters because each one has unique motivations while still feeling close to our lives. A hero is not always shown as a person who had no fears or have any special privileges. A priest, who often likes to get drunk, is actually really kind at heart. These heroes and adventurers that ventured on their journey don't always have big or noble reasons to travel. They can simply do it as a means of repaying their debt to someone, or just wanted to visit someone's grave in a far place.
Every episode in this season is really enjoyable to watch because you feel like you're getting something from it. I feel like every episode brings a value or theme that can relate to our daily lives. The afraid feeling when fighting dragons feels relatable even if I won't facing any dragons in my life. Every conversation in the series always feels meaningful and gives us perspective on the characters values, quirks, and thoughts, even while just strolling around shops in towns. I agree that this show is a slice-of-life at heart, and there are many of values in this show that we can carry on throughout our everyday lives.
Aside from the story, the world-building starts in a classic setting but has a lot to offer. You can expect a classic RPG world-setting with classic roles like mages, warriors, priests, monks, etc., as well as common monsters and tales. But the notable thing for me is how the show really utilizes every world-building element effectively. The show is more focused on meaningful narrative than getting too deep with the lore, although the lore is also vast and is introduced gradually. For example, with magic, you can see how each person values magic differently and not just its power. You can see how even simple, non-combat magic can be valued deeply in this show. When introducing creatures, such as dragons or demons, they try to create a good narrative when introducing them one by one in a way that's not overwhelming, which makes the pacing great.
Lastly, the animation studio really did well in the animation to bring this show to life. Every action is smoothly animated with great sound effects. There are lots of beautiful scenery throughout the journey that really brings the ambience, from relaxing towns to deep dungeons. Even just strolling around the town feels fun. Every battle is breathtaking even if just done with simple spells.
For me, Frieren really breathe a new life to a typical fantasy genre. While this show has really engaging fantasy narrative, what makes this show special for me is how it really feels close to our mundane, everyday lives. The journey in this season felt really engaging, fun and meaningful, whether just helping townfolks, searching for grimoires and accessories in shops, to fighting creatures and dungeons. Frieren's past adventures really marked a place in the world and served as a foundation to create many meaningful narratives throughout the show. Whether you're into fantasy-genre setting or not, this show would definitely put a smile on your face watching the characters growth as you follow along their journey :)
