Love Chunibyo & Other Delusions has been a favorite of mine since I first watched it way back in sixth grade. Since then I've come back to it over and over again and every time it hits so hard. The characters, the emotions, the relationship; all of it was some of the most exciting content I've watched. Not to mention the romance which was the perfect balance of awkward and cute and definitely wholesome.
The story is told from the perspective of Yuuta Togashi, who is formally known as the “Dark Flame Master.” In middle school when he had a deep interest in fantasy games, he pretended to be a wizard fighting against evil in his everyday life. In high school, he decides to go to a school far from his middle school and start fresh as a normal high school student, leaving his past behind. That’s when he meets his new neighbor Rikka Takanashi: a girl moving in with her sister who believes herself to have magical powers and a “wicked eye” which she covers with an eye patch. Yuuta wants nothing to do with her and yet their lives become inevitably intertwined. In their story they come across many other chuunibyous and former chuunibyous.
The real question is, what’s not to like about this story? The entire thing is just an overall really stress free and calming watch. It’s back with a ton of comedy as well as cool imaginary fight scenes, romance, and other things. There is also tons of great character development with Rikka. She’s going through all sorts of changes at this point in her life and has to make decisions about what exactly she wants. She’s constantly fighting against reality and is learning slowly how and if she even wants or needs to face it.
