Watched this in hopes it would have been a simple show that parodied BL tropes. What I got was a frankly boring slough that seemed to forget its main premise 5 times each episode. The concept of a reverse harem where the girl would rather ship the guys as opposed to date them is humorous to me, but throughout the 12 episode run, there is very little done with this supposed character trait of hers. It’s like the writers finished the script, realized they didn’t add any fujo moments, and half-hazardly crammed them in wherever they would fit. Cut out a couple minutes from each episode, and change the mentions of BL to any romance novel, and Kae (the main character) goes from a supposedly yaoi obsessed Otaku, to a bog standard reverse harem protagonist. And speaking of the harem, all of the guys are absolutely terrible! From spineless to boring to controlling, all of them are awful in unique ways. They aren’t entertaining to watch at all.
[Spoilers ahead]
For a couple of episodes, the show introduces a girl named Shima, and her whole joke is that she is better than the entire rest of the harem in every single facet. And there isn’t a deeper joke, she simply is just better. She is caring and sweet and actually into Kae’s interests. She supports her through thick and thin. And yet after this mini arc where she joins the main harem, her romantic prospects aren’t even touched on again. Even when Kae refers to her as a literal Goddess and her soulmate in the last episode, it’s like she doesn’t even exist. Extremely disappointing as it could have been a great commentary and absolutely hilarious for the, once again, fujoshi obsessed main character to end up with a woman. A lot of setup and great moments flushed down the drain for seemingly no reason. Even if they just mentioned off handedly that Kae just wasn’t into girls, that would have been better than just not talking about it ever.
The only alright episodes are 1-7, and maybe the last two as they actually utilize the initial framing semi-decently, but once episode 8 hits the show rapidly goes downhill. I really have no idea who the demographic even is, as none of the guys are all that interesting (and Kae doesn’t even seem to be into any of them, just really uncomfortable) nor does it really dismantle or even comment on a lot of BL tropes. Like I said, this is just a normal harem high school anime, with some sprinkling of jokes related to the BL genre. And hell, most of the time when they do engage with these tropes, Kae isn’t even there to see it! So is she actually obsessed with shipping these random guys, because it sure doesn’t seem like it. Perhaps I simply wasn’t paying attention, this show is so boring that maybe I missed all the moments of Kae being crazy towards them, but from what I recall just having finished this anime, the only one that she actually romanticized was Hayato. In fact, once Shima became part of the main cast, she was the one to push the guys to, for lack of better phrasing, act gay around each other.
I wouldn’t watch this show again. Interesting concept that isn’t utilized whatsoever until maybe the last couple episodes. Have no idea who the demographic is, because it has more yuri-bait than yaoi-bait.
