OVERALL RATING: 8.8/10
plot: 8/10 -- i greatly enjoyed the story from beginning to end. the story is very unique, but i did get confused about the series of events & what the main point of the anime was at some points. the main character is gon, but there is an arc in which gon is entirely irrelevant & another character, kurapika, seems to be the main character. i know that it is just a switch of perspective & kurapika is actually my favorite character so i really enjoyed the arc, i just found it a bit odd, but maybe i'm just not used to seeing anime with other character arcs. additionally, there are many challenges & subplots throughout the anime & i really enjoyed all of them, but a lot of the story made me forget that gon's main goal in the anime is to find his dad. it kind of felt like that goal was just a side quest on gon's adventure. the story also some unexpected dark turns that i was really surprised to see. i know that the anime itself is portrayed as more of a happy-go-lucky anime, especially when compared to the 1999 version of hunter x hunter, so the dark turns were really shocking.
world/setting: 9/10 -- i really like the world of hunter x hunter, but i understand that it's very similar to the modern world so it's not super unique. i believe that a lot of the world takes inspiration from the real world. for example, yorknew city is essentially just new york city. the continents are also similar to just regular continents. however, i really like the idea of nen & hunters, i found that to be very interesting. there is also one arc that takes place inside of a game & i really enjoyed that, i thought it was very cool.
purpose: 8/10 -- there is a clear goal for all of the characters in this season, but i felt like some of the events that happened did not correlate to their goals. it kind of felt like some of the events were like filler arc episodes in a way. of course, i enjoyed everything, but some of it just didn't seem like main story material to me.
characters: 9/10 -- most of the characters are very beautifully written, i love how the characters came together & interacted with one another. i loved their backstories & learning how they came to be who they are now. there is also an incredible amount of character development for a lot of them which was really nice to see! moreover, i enjoyed the characterization of the villains a lot, as well. however, i found 2 characters specifically to be a bit problematic so i did not enjoy seeing them: palm & hisoka. i found a lot of their actions to be very predatory, especially palm. i honestly felt uncomfortable with their characters, a lot of the things that palm said & did made me dislike her a lot. i think it's normal to dislike characters, especially if they were written to be disliked, but i don't think she was written to be like that. she was just uncomfortable to watch, hisoka as well..
storytelling: 10/10 -- the timeline is constructed chronologically so everything is well organised. i love how the information is presented to the viewer as we only know what we are shown, if that makes sense. we can speculate, we don't truly know things until they're explained which i enjoy. it was weird to me to see shifts in perspectives throughout the anime, but they weren't bad at all. i really enjoyed watching kurapika's arc.
enjoyment: 9/10 -- i watched the entire anime in less than a month if i recall correctly. i'm not sure what i was expecting, but i enjoyed it a lot, especially the first half of the anime. i have to say that i started feeling less into the anime during the greed island & chimera ant arcs. i was feeling that the plot was straying away from the characters' main purposes & goals from the beginning of the anime. the arcs were definitely interesting & unique, but i just didn't enjoy them as much as the other arcs.
animation/visuals: 10/10 -- i know that the artstyle & characters are a bit prettier & cleaner than the 1999 version as well as the manga, but i loved it since i typically love pretty anime. i also believe the animation for this anime was great. i'm not super into action, but i really think the fights in this anime were choreographed well. it seemed like a lot of effort was put into this anime which i appreciate.
pace: 6/10 -- something that bothered me greatly was how long or short each arc was. the first half of the anime was great, everything flowed smoothly & it was very nice to watch. however, i felt that later on it started to be paced differently. the greed island & chimera ant arcs felt so incredibly long, i don't recall how many episodes each arc was, but i know it was way more than the other arcs.
soundtrack: 9/10 -- the opening for this anime is one of my favorite openings that i've ever heard. i really like how the opening stayed the same throughout the anime, but different parts of the song would be played for some arcs. it really fit the vibe of the anime & i believe the soundtrack for the rest of the anime (such as the fights) was also really good. i have to say that nothing really stood out to me besides the opening so i can't remember the music too much, but i believe the soundtrack was great in terms of setting the mood throughout the anime.
gut feeling: 9/10 -- one of my favorite anime, but i will have to say it's not a perfect 10/10 for me.
