OVERALL RATING: 8.1/10
plot: 7/10 -- i believe this season alone does not have a superb story, but it is a great start toward a potentially amazing storyline. it's kind of like a standard shonen anime with the protagonist having a specific goal in mind, but i do like the storyline of becoming a hero despite being born quirkless. there are so many typical shonen themes & morals such as to do your best & go beyond so it's not super unique, but it's not bad. we've been introduced to some characters who seem to be important as well as clear antagonists. this season made me eager to see more.
world/setting: 7/10 -- this world takes place in the future where people have evolved & started being born with "quirks". i believe it's about 300 years or so into the future so it was a little disappointing that it isn't as futuristic as i expected for 300 years to advance technology. however, everything else is pretty good. i've never really been into "heroes" such as marvel heroes. i just was never interested, however, i do like this world of my hero academia! the existence of heroes & villains being normal is pretty cool. i also like that hero schools have been established in society so the characters are going to school to learn to be heroes.
purpose: 10/10 -- there is a clear goal for the protagonist & everything that he does is meant to help them reach their goals. i don't believe there were any significant detours in the plot. in this season, we see midoriya work hard to get into hero school & work hard while attending hero school. we also start to see the antagonists of the story & we begin to see what their goal is, as well.
characters: 7/10 -- the season introduces the viewer to a lot of characters very quickly & there aren't many episodes to really get any character development. it mainly focuses on midoriya, all might & bakugo. i think that most of the characters have a lot of potential for later seasons, but for now, they are pretty much just background characters that we barely know. one thing that has bothered me from the very beginning is how cruel bakugo's character is. right from episode 1, we see bakugo as an extreme bully to midoriya & it made me upset because this is a character who wants to be a hero. it seems contradictory for him to be so mean to a classmate while wanting to save lives. we do get to see a glimpse of why he is mean to midoriya due to a flashback in the middle of the season, but i didn't think that reason would be enough. i know bakugo has some superiority issues, but it's a bit extreme to me.
storytelling: 8/10 -- the timeline is constructed chronologically so everything is well organised. most of the story is based on midoriya's perspective & what is going on with him, but we do see a few of the other perspectives, such as during the USJ fight against the villains. i think the storytelling is pretty good, i'm excited to see more of the other characters though.
enjoyment: 8/10 -- i don't remember why i started watching this anime, but it was a great start as a first season. i didn't particularly like midoriya at first, but his character was very entertaining as the protagonist. i liked the storyline, as well. i think i found some parts boring & some parts were just not the best, but overall i liked it.
animation/visuals: 9/10 -- i really like the art style of my hero academia, it has a bit of that superhero comic book feel to it. the animation is also really good, especially during the fights. i think it could be a bit better, but it is very good already.
pace: 8/10 -- i think that the pace for this first season is pretty good. starting with an introduction to the hero world & how midoriya works to become a hero, it starts very well. continuing to follow midoriya as he takes the entrance exam to ua & attends the school, the pacing continues to be pretty good. it felt very fast for villains to be attacking their class when they just recently became hero students so it was a bit off to me, but it wasn't bad.
soundtrack: 10/10 -- i really liked the openings & endings for this season & i thought that they fit the anime perfectly, especially the first opening. the music throughout the season is also great, specifically during fights.
gut feeling: 7/10 -- overall it's a great anime & i consider my hero academia one of my favorite anime, but i have to admit this season is not exceptional.
