After all those years watching anime, it becomes harder to find shows that actually surprises and touches you deeply like Violet Evergarden was able to do. I've known about this show for quite a while now, but only after surpassing the mark of a thousand animes whatched, i finally decided to give it a chance, and that made me realize how wrong i was for taking so long to see it. That's why i decided to make my first ever anime review about it.
It's well known to everybody that's been into the anime world for quite some time how stunning and well done the visuals and animation in this series are thanks to the efforts of Kyoto Animation, add to that formula an ost that thoroughly delivers the emotions of the scenes to te viewer and you have the perfect stage to trap the spectators in a story that will drown you in thoughts and tears from the start to the end.
The story is developed with the help of a series of other short stories in each episode, and every single one of them is perfectly executed. The characters in it, although secondary to the main plot, are not just some disposable fodder to advance the story, each of them are interesting in their own unique ways, and that makes you connect with them even though for a short period. Also, every time the main character encounters those side stories, you can see her development as a letter writer and as a person, and it feels like you're evolving as a human with her as well.
Watching that fragile looking girl with zero understanding of her own feelings, that only knew how to be bossed by others, evolves as the story passes untill the moment she finally learns what it means to be human and live by her own desires makes so that you cannot feel other thing but compassion and empathy towards her, and when the season finally reaches it's last episode, it leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart. Being able to actually grasp the growth of the character connects you emotionally in a way that's hard not to enjoy.
To add even more to it's greatness, the script delivers such a beaultiful and deep message about what it means to live and what it actually means to feel something, that i couldn't help but to find myself lost in thoughts most of the time, and by the time i finished it, it was like Violet was already someone i knew and cared about for a long time.
Maybe if i watched it a few years ago when i had just started my journey as an anime entusiast, i wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as i did, but if there's one thing i can say for sure after going through the thirteen episodes of the first season is that Violet Evergarden is a must watch for those viewers who are looking for something bigger than just a good time.
