My Review of "Charlotte"!
Well, this is definitely an improvement from the other anime I've reviewed.
Story
This show follows Yuu Otosaka, a human with the ability to possess humans within a certain distance from him for only five seconds. Since he would use his powers for evil purposes, a girl with the powers to be invisible to one person by the name of Nao Tomori forces him to transfer schools and join the student council. Alongside a few other members, Yuu works with the council to stop other supernatural teenagers who are causing certain types of mischief around their city. However, Yuu faces plenty of hardships throughout the story that shift the focus from regulating powerful teenagers to discovering and fixing the future of Yuu and his unique friends.
Visuals
I liked a lot of the visuals and scenes in this anime. One of the scenes that I enjoyed looking at was the introduction of the Student Council room. It's beautiful to the eyes, and I didn't find many moments to be weird in appearance.
Characters
I like how the story approached each character. Whether it came to deaths or their peaks, I thought that the show handled each person's story well. They also had enjoyable personalities too, except I didn't find Yuu's sister as enjoyable as the others.
The Good
I love how the anime delivered Yuu's character development pretty well. You could tell how one event triggered his falling out and disconnection with humanity and how another event was able to slowly begin his reconnection with reality. I also found the humorous scenes entertaining, not being overexaggerated or overused. Speaking of not being overused, I like how carefully they inserted their fanservice scenes. It wasn't anything that would make me roll my eyes and it never ruined the quality of the story. The emotional scenes, although didn't make me break down in tears, definitely made me feel something. An example of this is with Nao's brother and his favorite musician. That scene was delivered so well and although not much was done, the animation did it justice and more by making it important. I also found the ending enjoyable. There were a few bumps along the way, but I like how they chose to wrap up the anime. It started off bitter, but I loved the sweet ending. It's definitely a bit of a heart-melter.
The Bad
Starting off with a slight complaint, I would've hoped to see more of Yuu's "villain arc" at the start where he would control others and beat them. We saw shades of his possible villain arc in a later episode, but it didn't really go that far. I thought that he could've been his own Light Yagami and outsmart people to get what he initially wanted. I don't mind the story that we got, but I wish that the first episode could've extended to maybe one more episode before we got the actual plot. Another small issue I had was the sudden and unexpected switch up from a concert to a flashback without much warning. When I watched it, I felt confused because it was like a sort of whiplash in emotions. Even after watching it and understanding it, I felt like they could've done so much better with introducing some lore and transitioning from the concert. I think the episodes following after did get weaker and little less enjoyable, but I didn't find them completely unbearable. Rather, I just found it a bit difficult to adjust to. Eventually, I did get a bit more used to it and ended up liking them almost as much as the previous episodes.
The Downright Ugly
I don't think that I found anything really problematic, which is a good thing.
Is It Worth The Watch?
I think that Charlotte is worth the watch. It's an entertaining anime that gives off a few emotional vibes alongside its comedic moments. Each of the characters were well-written and although I did find a few of them a bit unenjoyable at times, I think that all of the good cancels out most of the bad. There's still a few rotten apples in there that feel a bit weird to ignore, but it's still good nonetheless.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope this helped you with your decision on whether to watch this anime or not! If you already have watched it, I hope that you can agree with me with some of the points I made. ^^
