My Review of "Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!"
Hokkaido gals have quite the unique.... proportions.....
Story
Have you ever wanted a romantic story in Hokkaido with a gyaru and a bunch of friendly girls? Well this anime provides you exactly that! Transfer student Tsubasa Shiki moved to Hokkaido from Tokyo and meets this Hokkaido gyaru named Minami Fuyuki. As Tsubasa continues his new school life in Hokkaido, he meets a bunch of different friendly faces in his neighborhood and his school that help him adjust into his new environment.
Visuals
The visuals aren't anything special. There's not really much to talk about apart from the fact that it's good, but not a highlight, especially since it's not an action anime.
Characters
Tsubasa Shiki is a smart, yet a bit awkward student. His mind wanders off a bit at times during his interaction with his fellow female friends, but he means good intentions. His gyaru friend, Minami Fuyuki, is definitely not as smart compared to Tsubasa, but she's very popular and talkative in her class. Sayuri Akino, another friend that Tsubasa and Minami have, is a less talkative gamer that's trying to befriend others even though she thinks negatively of her real self. Tsubasa later meets his neighbor who ends up being the popular, yet very smart Rena Natsukawa, who is obsessed with Japanese clothing and culture in general. She's a genius and a perfectionist who's insecure about being approved by others.
The Good
First off the bat, I gotta give the show credit for making a funky banger OP. It's one of those openings that you just can't skip without feeling at least a slight hint of guilt. Like how could you not dance to that? I found Tsubasa Shiki to be a bit relatable in terms of his reactions. It's definitely fair for him to think the way that he's thinking with all the events that happen with the girls. Although the romance is definitely overexaggerated, I still found the wholesome moments to be enjoyable. I'm just a sucker for wholesome romance overall, so it's obvious for me to be very bias.
The Bad
This anime is at first fanservice centered, as in encouraging inappropriate thoughts. I will admit that it does have its charm at times, but it's definitely a bit unnecessary in other times. When it's unnecessary, it's definitely awkward to watch. I'm just glad that they tone it down and lean towards the wholesome side of romance in the later episodes. Although it's appropriate for her gyaru character, I found Minami Fuyuki's occasional modern slang to be cringey. It's not the VA's fault, it's just that I didn't get used to it. I honestly felt disappointed with the ending. It didn't really feel like an "ending", but it also doesn't seem like there's too much left in terms of story that they could add.
The Downright Ugly
Nah there ain't anything downright ugly with this show, eh?
Is It Worth The Watch?
If you're willing to get past a few episodes with strong fanservice, you'll be able to get a nice romantic story that's pretty enjoyable up until the end. I think it's worth the watch if you've got the will to endure the first few episodes.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope this helped you with your decision on whether to watch this anime or not! If you already have watched it, I hope that you can agree with me with some of the points I made. ^^
