Death note is just so much of a sick anime, both in the good way and in the way of the cast (preferably the main character).
And now watch it or have it watched before reading, SKIBIDI SPOILERS AHEAD (ok omg that was so cringe, forget that)
It starts of with a simple (but for a story, genius) idea, what would happen if the death gods in the sky - the Shinigamis - would loose their biggest power, the death note, a book that is able to do anything, when at the end resulting in death.
Just alone this in itself is such a great story idea and makes for so many opportunities to form a good shaped story.
The Cast, THE CAST, we have Light, a seemingly normal student, turning into a FUCKING psychopath just by the power of a “simple”book. We have a death god with humor like the most funny comedian I’ve ever seen, like bro, he’s just chilling, being entertaint while Light does all of the work. Misa who is just so desperate that she would do anything for light, while just being completely abused by him, and L, L gives the story the standard Crime, mystery feel. While also being such a sympathetic dude. Bro cannot sit normally and I love it, you see him, you know it’s him. That’s also probably the most ever let down of death note, L dies, I would say it was needed for the story but it was sad.
The Plot goes hard, Lights comeback is just absurd and I literally started screaming while in bed. The fact that he social engineers himself so that he is able to overcome his loss of memory through the death note is a main character move that just hits different, especially IF IT’S YOUR SECOND ANIME, YES THAT’S RIGHT, I WATCHED IT RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF MY JOURNEY, DO YOU KNOW HOW THAT SHIT HITS?
We also have some smaller plots in a cat and mouse game and it’s just a time, I would like to list some of my favorite, most memorable examples: The time where he used a small TV inside the chips bag using one hand to study and one to write down names, THAT IS a crazy move and it sure did trick them. Then the Bus, where he positioned himself as a casual victim, that’s also getting some IQ points from me, when he played out the fact that his dad had purchased the eyes, it’s been a moment, I don’t remember the exact name, ok? But when he made his dad believe he wasn’t Kira, crazy.
I like the journey of Light, from casual student, to calling himself “god of the world”, to becoming a psychopath, that just keeps on going, switching goals from “saving the world from criminals (by frighting all of humanity)” to just an endless fight between he and the police.\
But it’s not all rose and roses (yep, I made that up on the spot), the end of the show is the most disappointing thing I’ve seen in all of anime, not in a bad way, but out of the perspective of someone who just watched 37 episodes in one season in a few days, getting sympathized with a psychopath serial killer and as a viewer getting dragged on his side. That also is something they done really well, the give you that realization shock moment at the end: “I really was on the side of a psychopath, I was happy when he outplayed the police and I was scared they’ll get him.”
That, that right there is something that hits real and is some bonus points for the experience. I think it was a good decision to shock the viewer with just letting Light set everything on a single card and failing, something he never did for 37 episodes.
Overall is this a Goldie, a must watch and the popularity is absolutely deserved.
I am currently (out of boredom) writing reviews for everything I have watched. If you are interested in seeing that, checkout my bio. I’m not going to put a link here, cause guidelines. Feel free to check it out, or not.
