I watched the first half of the first episode back in december of 2023. That’s’ why it’s right after death note in my sheet. Then I picked it up again after I watched Frieren. Enough of that, the main point here is: I AM SO GLAD THAT I PICKED IT UP AGAIN.
Spoilers ahead.
This anime takes you on a journey, I would say that it almost falls under the category of “happiness drug” (if you wonder what that is, it’s an anime - or Manga - with clear objectives, easy to understand story, characters that are just easily lovable, you get the picture). That too is a great thing about Charlotte, the story is easy to understand and follow but it also has it’s complexity and arc that makes sense and it’s original too.
We start into the anime with a dude with a special ability, AAAaaand of course he abuses it. Why wouldn't he? He can switch into other peoples bodies for a few seconds, do and see anything and then switch back. He uses it to rock through class tests, just copying from the other students, he does not know that he has the most special, the KING ability, that’s a thing I really like! The story unfolds in front of your eyes, the’re are hints and stuff in front of your eyes but they only make sense later when you have the bigger picture. This is peak storytelling imo.
Then that dude get’s recruited by some random people. If you see them out of context you’d think that they are straight up ripped out of a black cat Vrchat lobby. I like that, it directly feels so familiar. He switches to a school and the story unfolds, it’s the ability school. All of the strange kids. He takes his sister with him, also I like the family insider of the seasoning that Yuu is absolutely pissed of by but he does not dare to speak that out. It’s also a running geck I really like.
The time at the academy is filled with exploring different abilities and funny clips, that would be the “happiness drug” part.
Ok, looks like I don’t need to many more characters so I will just come to my most stirring part for me. It’s episode 7. I also made a status post after I watched it, because it just left me speechless.
Episode 7 is about Yuu just dropping everything after loosing his sister. He leaves the academy and just starts mutating into a psychopath. He starts to confront random people that they did’t do much, he starts using tooth-sticks as fucking millitary weapons, and he becomes just a scary person. At the end of the episode Nao confronts him with the due topic. “Will you continue like this?”. Yuu at first reacts really disgusting and does not wanna cooperate to change anything.
This episode, this one, hit’s so hard for me because I know this feeling of wanting to throw everything away (not the life itself, but being in the mood of not caring what happens to yourself, just continuing to live without living, seeing what happens, you may know what I mean).
The backstory, once revealed a few episodes later, is really enjoyable and get’s finished of pretty accordingly. I like the ending and how you can just live with it, it doesn’t feel rushed like… other stories \coughs and it just fits the previous build up.
I am so glad that I picked up this anime again. I would recommend it to anyone who likes drama.
Ok now just need to come up with some silly joke at the end… Ok maybe not this time, but how about next time you go to the bathroom you don’t take your phone with you, rather a Manga, trust me, you’ll feel like you’ve used your shitting session MUCH better. Ok that was kinda random…
