Suzume is a real beauty (that took too many attempts to spell right). I could not write this down in a single text, so I will split it up into categories:
This will be a ride so let's begin, by firstly writing that this review will absolutely not be spoiler free.
Also I watched this movie 2 times. One time with a crusty tablet, broken screen protector and no headphones and the second time on the big digital whiteboard in school with my crew. Just for context.
The visuals are pretty. They are indeed. The fight scenes, I don't even know if you can call them fight scenes for real, it's a bit different, we'll get there. It all feels really satisfying to watch and you feel like there's been a lot of care put into. I would even go as far as saying that some nice moments you could use as a desktop wallpaper, seriously.
This is a bit overshadowed by the OST (which will get quite a focus in this review), but it's what you would expect and I won't go any deeper than that here.
Now the juicy part. The OST. I've listended to this one so frequently for a while it was my goto when I listened to really any music. If feels like the cooperation between RADWIMPS and Kazuma Jinnouchi worked out pretty well and we have a great result in the end. The music also perfectly fits every moment of the movie, from the scene on the ferry to the crazy scene above Tokyo.
They all are really casual, I would say very fitting for the time the movie plays in, which would be, well kinda today. Suzume got some nice and comforting face expressions. Souta is kinda an Alpha Male but that's just me, or maybe it's based on the fact he litterally PUTS HER ON HOLD AT THE END…
The Story is alright, it's one of those right in the middle of naive and needing to study the show to actually understand what's going on, Suzume seems to not really focus on a deep story, which is very reasonable, considering that they need to get the whole thing through in 2 hours (and no, that one minute isn't going to cut it). The objectives are very clear and gives the characters enough room to act.
The main emotions you would feel in this movie would be the ones from Suzume herself, she definitely goes through a lot throughout the 2 hours of runtime. When she has to sacrifice Souta above Tokyo or when she finally meets him again.
This is extending a bit on the Story aspect. The watch feels a bit like a mix out of sidequests and real objectives, one time we chill at a little Motel from the oranges girl, one time we collect old dusty documents and the other we ram a key in a lock to crowd out a… a worm? Well, the main objective of course is: THE ROMANCE PART. Yep Yep, works out.
Overall suzume is a pretty, comforting, easy to watch and well made experience. It's also very accessible, as the time of writing this, it's streamable on Netflix for all tiers and on crunchyroll, that's really nice to see.
Ok now I just need to finish this up. Well, too uncreative this time, ok no, remember, when you’re laying in bed, cringing out over something you did years ago, you’re alone, you are the only one doing cringe things, that's why no one else is cringing out at night, I hope this helps you :3
