I’ve started watching this anime a while back because a friend ( @Bravermars ) told me to do so. It actually kinda was a wild ride because I had so many pauses in the watch, but anyway.
Darling in the Franxx starts of in the most puzzling setting I’ve seen so far. Everything is kinda techi and developed but the outside looks completely destroyed and it just feels off. The setting could be described as the dead internet theorie kinda but irl. All of the humans became invincible and started war against the Kyoryu. They just live in these wandering plantations and getting their daily dose of happiness and all of that garbage from machines they built. They also have Franxx to fight against those Kyoryu, which are wierd enemies that they started war with by stealing their shit for energy.
And now our main cast kicks in. A group of almost teenagers, existent to ride the Franxx and destroy the Kyoryo. The Franxx are like so wierd, because they require the love and passion between the two drivers (don’t ask me who comes up with that…). And the fights scenes for that are like absolutely amazing, studio trigger really did their work there and I'm dying for those moments. The cast - while being absolutely amazing - is just one of the many groups that are riding those Franxx and we find out that they just get cultured in “the garden”. It’s an interesting scenerio. All of the adults don’t die, they are invincible, so the population will never change but the Franxx can only be steered by people with passion and love, something that the adults don’t have anymore. Of course the Franxx get used for sexualition quite, idk what word to put here. THE MANGA IS WIERD OK?!
The story arc is really wierd. I think the first like 16-17 episodes it’s really really good, following what I just described. It really tells you this message of “these guys lost their humanity, let’s try to not let that happen” and it’s kinda this philosophy behind “what would even happen if we wouldn't die?”. It’s actually a great question to ask and I’m digging all for it. But the last few episodes. Ahhhh idk. I remember texting my friend something like “yeah ima continue watching space wars now”. And that’s basically it. They just somehow summoned some new enemies from the ground up in the last few episodes after the Kyoryu were the main enemies for… idk. the entirety of the series? It’s just WIERD. But to be fair: The ending - filled with hope - when they build up a new civilization is really heartwarming and I personally really liked that!
Overall I think: Darling in the Franxx starts of with a great story, has a great cast supporting thus, the animation and music is great but I think that it’s not thought through enough. But it’s still a piece of art for me and I really enjoyed watching it, even if the last part just drifted into something completely different there.
Oh yeah, did I mention that 002 is hot?
