No matter how much we change from our past, we'll still always be ourselves
I can't believe it's over. I've spent over a year watching this show and I really do feel like I've grown up with these amazing characters. I do want to add my personal connection with this story as a whole, but first I want to talk about everything amazing with this season and the show as a whole.
(SPOILERS AHEAD)Mayoi Hell Arc
Araragi finally talks about his feelings of Hachikoji's death and it's heartbreaking. The beginning of the first episode beautifully shows Araragi's feelings of grief and it's heartbreaking to see how much he still misses her. It was so fun seeing Hachikoji and Araragi reunite with each other, and it's really insane to think about how lucky they are to even have such a strong bond to begin with. Araragi starts to think back on his past decisions and realizes that he still would never change a single thing which shows how much confidence he still has in his ways of saving people. What I like about this arc the most is seeing how much of an impact Araragi has had for Hachikoji. She gets furious at Araragi for even considering that he isn't worthy of being resurrected and persuades him to keep living his life to keep loving the people around him. The arc starts at him wanting to die in order to be close to someone he loves again, but realizes that if he keeps on living there's more for him to experience and more people to be connected with. I also love seeing Hachikoji being resurrected again at the end and it's really sweet that she's back (T_T).
Hitagi Rendezvous Arc
This arc is easily one of my personal favorites. I think that this arc shows how absolutely stunning the character writing is in this show by how much Araragi and Hitagi has changed. When I compare both of these characters to how they were at the beginning of the show, I just become speechless. It's amazing how much this relationship had changed the way they both act and it's probably one of the most beautiful depictions of a relationship that I've seen. They've matured so much since the beginning of the show and I love seeing how much they've grown together. This arc just fully flexed how amazing this show's writing is tbh.
Ougi Dark Arc
The final arc of Araragi's story challenges Araragi to taking full ownership of who he is as a person and it's one of the best endings I've seen to a character's writing. Ougi has been a character that has always felt weird since her introduction and all the way until now. When we find out that she's really Araragi's criticisms for himself, it all starts to make sense. She always acted as if she was Araragi's inner conscious and that's because she is. The final confrontation with Araragi and Ougi makes it seem like Araragi will have to put up a fight, but surprisingly he doesn't. Ougi seems like she accepts her fate of dying and we can see why when she talks to Tsukihi. Ougi feels like a lost cause and when she asks for help, she still doesn't receive any. Araragi feels conflicted with having to defeat Ougi because he would be contradicting his beliefs of saving everyone by killing Ougi. This is the chance for Araragi to become a better person by getting rid of his flaws and saying goodbye to his adolescence by getting rid of it forever. However, right before the darkness consumes Ougi he decides to save her and risk his own life like he's always known for doing. Even though Ougi sacrificing Araragi's criticisms on himself would be the right choice to make Araragi become better, Araragi decides to take the route of correcting his mistakes instead. Oshino making a come back in this scene represents how Araragi has finally grown into a person who doesn't need to rely on other people to make the right decision and now can solve his problems by himself rather than asking for help all the time. I love how this arc shows how we can show gratitude for others by taking care of ourselves and these characters have been showing their gratitude to Araragi by doing this exact thing in the story.
This whole season felt so awarding by seeing how much these characters have grown and learned to save themselves from the act of someone showing care for them. That's the end for my Monogatari series review for everything that was shown in the show.
I've been on and off with this show for over a year now. I was an incredibly different person at the time I watched the first episode and this whole show really did feel like a whole journey now that I'm finally finished. I feel as if I've grown with Araragi from the very beginning and I'm glad that I got to experience a story that had a main character that feels exactly like me. Thank you Nisio Isin for making one of the most well written casts I've seen, arcs that provided important life lessons, and an experience that will remain close to me for my growth as a person.
Even though I have changed as a person from when I first started this show, __I still am and will always be me :).
