Let me start by saying I’m not a seasoned anime reviewer. According to Anilist, I’ve watched around 70 anime, and while that’s not a small number, I know there are many out there who’ve seen hundreds more. This is also my very first time writing a review for anything, so apologies if it feels a bit all over the place—I just really wanted to share my thoughts after finishing Wind Breaker.
Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers. You’ve been warned!
✦ First Impressions
When I first read the description for Wind Breaker, I didn’t think much of it. I assumed it would be your typical “tough high school where fighting is everything” type of show. (Funny enough, while writing this I re-read the synopsis and realized I either misread it or completely imagined that premise.)
Right from the beginning, the main character, Sakura, caught my attention—mainly through his character design (which, let’s be honest, is always a hook in anime). In the opening scenes, I felt like I knew exactly where the story was heading: school brawls and fights for dominance. But very quickly, the anime steered in a different direction, and I was pleasantly surprised by where it went.
✦ Story & Character Development
The first few episodes didn’t blow me away, but they were enjoyable enough. I figured this would just be a straightforward action story with some cool fights sprinkled in. Then came the tournament arc—and that’s when everything changed for me.
The level of emotion and character development during the tournament genuinely caught me off guard. While the early fights were fairly standard, everything from Sakura’s fight onward hit differently. Anime sometimes drags fights across multiple episodes, which can be overkill, but Wind Breaker managed to keep me engaged the entire time. I was totally immersed in the final two fights—they were intense, emotional, and gave us meaningful backstory and growth for the characters involved.
What really sealed the deal for me was the OST, especially the track "Stronger", which I now have on repeat. It elevated the emotional impact of the scenes and became the perfect soundtrack for those climactic moments.
✦ The Final Episodes & What’s Next
Even after the tournament wrapped up, I found myself smiling and grinning through a lot of the last few episodes. The anime continued to build on its characters and set the stage for what’s next without losing its momentum. The ending was satisfying and left me genuinely excited for Season 2—which, at the time of writing this, has already started airing. I can’t wait for all the episodes to be out so I can binge it again.
✦ Final Thoughts
I don’t think Wind Breaker is trying to be the “best anime ever,” but something about it stuck with me. Maybe it’s the combination of heartfelt moments, solid fights, and strong character arcs. Maybe it’s just the right anime at the right time. Either way, it made such an impression that I felt the need to write this review—and that says a lot.
If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot. It might just surprise you the way it surprised me.
Thanks for reading my first ever anime review! I hope you enjoyed reading it, and I hope I convinced you that this is a great anime. Sorry for the mess, and maybe I’m hyping this anime up too much, but I just feel like it was that good.
