This is my first review, please be gentle with me.
Chicken Papa is an unironic masterpiece with many layers of depth. Let's start from a basic rundown of the plot -
A woman walks into an elevator and tries going to her floor. Right as the elevator doors are about to close, our protagonist waves his hand between the doors and walks into the elevator. He tells the woman what floor he's getting off at and tries making awkward small talk.
Now let's go into some more specific things. Firstly, the comedy -
There is one main joke in this short anime, and that is "you probably ate garlic chicken for dinner last night". This is a multi layered joke. Firstly, that is such a dad comment to make, which shows that he is indeed a dad. Secondly, the character saying this is a chicken himself. Thirdly, chickens are actually cannibalistic creatures, which explains why our chicken protagonist wasn't angered by his neighbor eating chicken. And finally, the lady most likely doesn't know about the previous fact, so she feels guilty and apologizes. Truly masterful writing. It might not be the funniest joke I've seen, but it definitely is one of the deepest.
The part I am most impressed by is the character designs -
Our protagonist, Chicken Papa, is, as his name implies, a father. But we never actually see, or even hear about his child in the anime. Yet there is no doubt that he is a dad. How's that possible? Our protagonist both looks and acts like a stereotypical dad: he makes weird comments, he dresses way too laid-back, and he makes typical dad-sounds. This is a peak example of "show, don't tell".
And though not as impressive, the neighbour is also really well thought out. She looks like a typical shy office lady, which is the complete opposite of our dad. You can see how uncomfortable she is to be around our dear papa, and the reason for it all is explained just by her character design alone.
And a subtle background detail I noticed, they start on the first floor, the lady gets off at the ninth floor, and our dad gets off on the tenth floor. This makes it all the more awkward knowing how long their elevator ride really was.
The animation isn't perfect, but it's pretty good for what it is. It could definitely use improvement, but overall there isn't too much to complain about.
There isn't a lot to comment on the audio part, the background sounds definitely made the atmosphere more immersive, but other than that it's mostly just normal audio work.
But now the main flaw and what keeps me from giving it a 10/10 - I think that it ends too suddenly. There's easily room for another minute of content, more awkward silence, maybe another joke, and finally the characters getting off the elevator. If it didn't end so suddenly it would definitely be a 10/10, no doubt about it.
Overall, I definitely recommend everybody watch Chicken Papa, it won't take much of your time, and it might even change how you view media.
