Ah, this movie was a good watch. Flawed, but good. So, let's do this.
I expect a lot from a JJK movie, with how good the animation in normal JJK is. And I got to say, it met my expectation. The animation is good, and the story is good. It's honestly really good, and worth watching.
To start with, the main character, Yuta Okkotsu, is so relatable, and honestly, I prefer him over Yuji. So much so, that I can't wait to see Yuta again in season 3 of JJK. He's a depressed guy who's already tried to kill himself, but.. him just wanting to know that it's ok to live, is something that people with depression deal with. They want to know that it's ok to live, but.. sometimes they can't find that reason.
So, Yuta's journey is inspiring to those people. I would know, I have depression. Also, it gives a lot of good contexts for JJK. And it gives us more Maki, which is always enjoyable. She was one of my favorite characters in JJK, so seeing her in this movie, is super cool. I just wish, and this is a flaw, that she had more fight scenes. I wish we actually saw that fight with her vs Geto. Sure, she lost, and that fight isn't in the manga.. but to be fair, Panda's fight was way more expand compared to the manga, which, that fight was super short in the manga. Barely even a fight. So, they could have expanded on the Maki vs Geto fight.
Now, animation, and fight scenes are what JJK is known for, and this movie is no expectation. The fight scenes are very well animated and are very well choreographed. And I'm glad we got to see some moments, that in the anime we've only heard about. Like Todo actually fighting, as belief as that was. We got to see Nanami's record setting Chain Black Flashes. We got to see these guys actually fight all those curses, which we didn't see in the manga. Which is actually my biggest problem with the manga, but that's another review for another time.
And Yuta's black flash, while it doesn't make sense with him barely even knowing how to use Curse Energy, has a cool factor, so I have to let it slide. Them's the rule. And that black flash is, chef kiss, greatly animated. you could tell they locked in for that black flash. As they should.
Also, the whole Geto vs Yuta fight is super well animated and is just a great fight. Which, considering it's JJK, and it's known for that, that's saying something. But my main complaint.. some parts of the movie just feel like they're not connected to any other part of the movie. Honestly, it feels like you're just watching multiple specials, rather than a full movie.
So overall, it's a good movie. It has some flaws with some fight scenes that should have been longer, or some fight scenes that should have been in the movie but weren't, and the movie feels more like you're just watching multiple episodes back to back, rather than a full movie, which really holds it back imo. So, an 8.5 out of 10 (or 85 out of 100) seems fitting!
