Blue lock. Blue lock. Blue lock. How? How, with a movie budget, did you disappoint me this much?
[WARNING: SPOILERS]
So, this is Blue Lock: Episode Nagi. I will say, I haven't read the manga, so maybe the same problems plague the manga as well, but still. This is hardly a movie. Anime Specials are more of a movie than this official movie.
This movie is so mid, that it took me a while to come up with enough characters to actually write a real review. I almost didn't, because what is there to talk about? It's that much of a mid-movie. It's not bad enough to rage over, and but it's not even good enough to get me hyped.
So, let's start with the good parts. Some of the animation is good. Not the best in Blue Lock, but not the worst. The auras are at least not season 2 bad. In fact, those auras are one of the best parts of the movie. I love how Nagi's aura is galaxy theme. It's nice on the eyes, and gives him this mysterious look about him.
And, the story, per usual, is good. It has good build up, and good characters.. and the bits that they add are good! I'm glad we got to see these events from Nagi's pov.
But.
We did not need it. Most of this movie is just recycled scenes from season 1. Line for line, bar for bar. Some scenes are just completely unchanged. So, for half the movie, you're just rewatching the team Z vs Team V match, just with different lines, and some different scenes, and a worst direct shot.
It is not worth the 1-and-a-half-hour length of this movie. And the fact that this movie is part of the reason that season 2 looks the way it does, is just unforgiveable. That's why I'm so harsh, because we didn't need this. Is it fun? Yeah. Is it interesting? Yeah. Is it worth checking out? No. Honestly, they could have just thrown in some of this stuff in a flash back scene in season 1, and nothing would change.
Sure, it gives context to everything Nagi and Reo are, but as a movie? No, it's not worth it. I was tempted to just turn it off, cause it was starting to bore me. Blue lock, the anime that got me into Soccer with how hyped it was, with how cool it was, bored me with a movie budget. All because the scenes were just the same scenes I've already saw.
And that is why I think this movie fails. It could have just been a tv special. It didn't have enough content to be 1-and-a-half-hours long, so they filled it with recycled scenes with different voice over.
I love blue lock, and it got me to love soccer. And when I went to watch this movie, I was so hyped! Blue lock, an anime that is already really well animated, with good action, but this time with a movie budget! This should be epic! But this? Come on, this is disappointing. This is the one time when I'll say, don't watch this. Save yourself the disappointment.
I can give it no higher than a 5/10 (or 50/100), and that's with me being generous.
