Panty and Stocking was created as something new and fresh to do after the production of Gurren Lagann (which is one of my favorite animes of all time). So, the creators just thought of a bunch of ideas they wanted to do and put it to paper. Because of this, episodes are shorter, each episode being about 11 minutes. Regardless of the shorter episode structure, some of the episodes feel like they drag on forever or are just kinda boring.
PSG is a very infamous anime, known for being insanely raunchy and the most trollish ending in anime history (a Gainax staple, strangely enough) until just recently where Trigger (a studio formed from former Gainax staff) got the rights back and a new season/revival/reboot is set to release in July 2025.
PSG kind of annoys me. You have absolutely AMAZING episodes, like the first and last one, especially, that have amazing animation, wonderfully fun action scenes and legendary music (which is just a positive of the entire series) but then you have some episodes that are just kind of... annoying. The movie parody episodes can be a bit hit or miss, and I personally dislike the nosepicking episode the most.
I know the anime is meant to just kind of be a playground of stuff to do, ideas they had that they really wanted to do but they weren't really thought out that much. Again, this is helped by the shorter episode lengths, but near the end, the episodes feel like they're struggling to reach the 13 episode mark.
The episodes with the demon sisters are the best, and their debut episode is probably the best of the series. The "taboo" ghosts are okay, and the movie parodies and the short shorts are probably my least favorite.
Another thing that's really unique of this series is it's dub. I honestly cannot think of this series without thinking about the absolutely amazingly fitting dub they did. The animation itself was already aiming for a more western animation style, with a lot of the sound effects and text being written in English instead of Japanese. Sure, you have plenty of other anime that have a more preferable dub over sub (my personal picks are Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy), but for something this raunchy, it comes off a lot more entertaining when you can hear the swears and insults in native English. It's probably one thing I will miss the most from the new series until it gets a dub.
I really like PSG. The high points are super damn high, but I can't in good faith give it a higher score due to how disappointing the lows can be. If the series was shorter, and the series was solely on the ghosts/demon storylines, then I would definitely rank it higher. Regardless, this is still a good anime to watch. Just don't be shocked if they find something that grosses or freaks you out.
