Being completely honest, at the very start of the season when I was looking for what to watch, it went completely under my radar, but after a few days I found out about it and realized it might prove to be interesting. It’s a blend of two of my favorite anime tropes. Kuudere’s and Shoujo Romance.
The Too-Perfect Saint centers around Philia Adenauer, an obedient saint that see’s mistreatment in her relationship and family life. Having to deal with getting sold off to another kingdom by her ungrateful second prince fiancé.
The character writing in this anime is incredible. While the characters themselves aren’t actually that impressive, The Too-Perfect Saint perfectly utilizes one of my favorite tropes in Shoujo romance anime; It’s ability to write characters that make you absolutely hate them and wish for the Heroine to succeed in their revenge plot. Julius Ziltonia Is an unredeemable piece of trash and I love it. Her parents also fit under this but they are less important once Philia is sold off to the other Kingdom.
This is only a minor nitpick. while I do like the simplicity of the Saint’s magic system. Philia and her sister only ever use the same few spells, I get that not every anime needs to have a complex library of magic that is used, but no matter the situation whether it be a casual day out putting up magic pillars, or when the world is running rampant with dangerous monsters overwhelming the party, There is basically only 2 spells used by all Saints, the spell that puts up the pillars, and the offensive spell “Silver Judgement.” Any unique magic is saved for moments where it is absolutely necessary.
Philia Adenauer: She is a great main character to root for. Her only character flaw being her self-esteem which causes her to work hard as a saint to satisfy those around her to such a fault that everyone believes she slacks off and doesn’t put in as much effort into the job of a saint as her sister, even though that’s not the case. Leading her to be sold off to the neighboring kingdom.
Oswald Parnacorta: I expected him to be a well written character, but he is mainly the Golden Retriever love interest type of prince. In the beginning when he meets Philia I was a little disappointed to find out he and his kingdom were actually the ones who she was being sold to, instead of him being the hero that tries saving her from the trade.
Julius Ziltonia: As I mentioned earlier in this review, I hate him. Though his character is probably one of the most entertaining of the series just because of how cartoonishly villainous he is. By the end I was even praising Kouhei Amasaki for doing such a good job voicing him.
Both the Opening and Ending are incredible. Especially the Opening. It really helped me stay motivated to keep watching.
The Too-Perfect Saint ended up being my favorite new anime of the season. So I definitely recommend a watch.
