So you like Isekai? Yes? well too bad you won't be finding any of that here. To be fair it's not one, however it seems to make deep cuts that wouldn't be unseen in any modern Isekai, tho with major twists.
Honestly I'd say this is it's strongest suit and I have little bad to say about it. The action scenes and sword play are very good, putting thought towards the details those entire. The magic and it's effects looks beautiful & aren't over the top as can happen with so many anime.
Was fitting, I didn't feel anything was out of place or it always seemed fairly spot on. The audio in general was rather lovely, the environmental & overall sound effects were so often spot on that it added to the setting.
Oh boy... the story... It's missing a soul, it's sadly so very hollow. There is no depth & what depth exist only does because of the characters themselves with that which they wear on their sleeves. Now I get the idea that the main character is supposed to be completely oblivious or even optionally to the women around him, but it does detract from the series more then it adds. His nature is so unnatural to be more painful then a enjoyable twist on the oh so common harem. But I do believe they could have pulled this off if there was more depth given to him as to why he felt or acted the way he did, which was only slightly touched on. As it stands this series is far to shallow, however that doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable or fun to watch, just keep your expectations medium low.
Yes, I continue to compare this to Isekai's because it does feel like that was the feel the creators were going for. Taking someone from outside there environment and placing them into another unexpectedly, in this case not another world but another social environment. This continues with the pseudo harem built into the anime with all his former students and their clear desire to be with him and please him. Which to his credit the anime does express some that he sees it, but chooses to ignore it for the most part which is more or less the hook of the anime for many. This is thus far a family friendly anime that anyone can watch even children, nothing in this anime is really offensive. For an anime of this kind the lack of all the ubiquitous nude scenes is a surprise, a honestly pleasant one? but we will have to see where they take this one. I think for Isekai fans this one would be an enjoyable change from the norm & could be enjoyable.
This is an overall solid fantasy anime, tho as I've said it's far to shallow. This season the world was being built out & filled in, this is something that's necessary in a series without a lot of lore to pull from. The beasts that are dealt with are standard fantasy and the necromancy is well played, both being well integrated into the story & not feeling forced in. I think if you like fantasy anime's, this one would be middle of the road for most fans.
So overall? I personally enjoyed my time watching it, but it really needs more fleshing out & depth. I think like with many other anime's it could have used more episodes for the first season, however I don't feel this was a big negative & it did what it set out to do even if not to my satisfaction. If this does get a second season? I think it will keep get better as it fulls in the gaps & as the ice thaws. I very much hope that in the future we do see a second season because the potential is there, even if it wasn't a blockbuster.
