I have rewatched Kimi ni Todoke 1 and 2 a couple of times prior to finding Anilist and I had consigned to the fact then that season 2 is the end for the anime adaptation of the story. Season 3 sprung out like a jack-in-a-box giving us a look into the evolved lives of our beloved protagonists.
Well, shouldn't be surprised about this since the story doesn't really end at season 2. Moreover, wiki did mentioned about the characters' potential careers which was taken from the manga as its source.

This time, Kuronuma Sawako, our lovely protagonist, and her crush, Kazehaya Shouta, had finally gotten together after their big confession at the end of season 2. However, because the confession made by Kazehaya was in the middle of the school grounds before the parade, inevitably many people overheard it, and this caused rumours to spread like wildfire in the school.
To recap, Sawako has been revered in school as the creepy girl due to her misunderstood aura and looks. But Kazehaya, Chizu, and Ayane were among the first to overlook that and realised that Sawako was actually a very nice girl. After Kazehaya and Sawako got together, many girls in the school started to gossip about whether their relationship is short-term.
Fortunately for our cute couple, they did not let the gossips get in the way of their relationship and remained very steadfast... that is... for a short while.... Well, I think the rumours did get to them eventually...

(Picture Source: Beneath the Tangles thru' Google Image Search)The most enjoyable part of season 3 is watching Sawako and Kazehaya trying to get their parents approval, or at least acknowledgement, for their relationship. So far in the past two seasons, we have only seen Sawako's parents. This time, we get to visit Kazehaya's family.

As a closing, it seems like whoever developes Kimi ni Todoke decided to grace us with the third season after don't-know-how-many-years since the second season. It seems like there could be a fourth season (unconfirmed to my knowledge), probably to catch up to the manga.
Anyway, this third season is a great breath of fresh air where we finally get to see some progress and development for our protagonists after the events in season 2. Would be looking forward to a fourth season should there be any.
