A brief review of the anime movie "Bubble"
The review does not include spoilers.
The film is a mix of "Weathering With You" combined with the existential questions and motivations one might encounter in "Children Of The Sea." It's a simple and enjoyable story that doesn't delve too deep. However, it uses a lot of symbolism to convey its intended meanings.
Technically, this film is flawless. The music was stunning, the sound effects as they moved across the bubbles were impressive, and the animation was skillfully executed. But the problem lay with the characters and the actual story. The entire film feels like a scene of Levi's running and movement from the second season of AoT. The amount of speed and expertise in the camera work is unparalleled. It's been a while since I've seen a film that made me want to move along with it, because the sound of someone other than Hiroyuki Sawano is something I haven't heard in a while. All the tracks, in particular, offer a great level of quality with a Leitmotiv that runs through all of them. The visuals are clearly not disappointing in any way! The director mentioned a new style of hybrid 3DCGI plus animation in the film, and it shows! I think the sakuga potential in this film has reached its peak.
One of my biggest complaints about this film is that it presents a unique and fascinating world and then introduces a major parkour challenge and game where the characters have to compete for a flag while overcoming parkour obstacles to win a prize, which is usually food. It then gives us just enough detail about the teams to be interesting, and then after this, it creates a disconnect and moves on to the main story. You only understand the story through some hints, and it's not connected to the competition theme or integrated with it, feeling like two separate stories where one is half-filler. I was asking myself, why parkour? The idea itself is strange and interesting. But it's also odd; I rather think the director wanted to draw a lot of movement and action scenes through parkour and jumping over water, which is why it's like this.
The story and the main character are my biggest personal issues. Anime films tend to have very unusual stories with many gaps and open questions, and this film has certainly made a place for itself on that list for criticism. The main character is essentially a brat. I feel he is someone who has psychological problems with his society, more of an empty soul... The best character in the film was "Shin," a caring personality and former parkour champion. It's noteworthy that I was able to finish the film because of him.
