ODD TAXI Anime Review
This anime review is noteworthy, and I'd like to talk about it. It’s been a long time since I first saw this anime, around 2021. But at that time, anime was like a form of nostalgia for me. So, when this anime was released and I watched it, it gave me a pleasant feeling I hadn't experienced in a long time. In this article, I will try to express some of my feelings and review for you. In my opinion, as a director, you might get lost in a story like this just for the sake of character design or the weight of the animation, which is the daily routine for many anime. However, this anime has no animation-heavy elements other than a taxi and exploring a fictional city. This has made the character development better than many similar anime that aim to focus on their characters. Also, I am not exaggerating if I say that for a while, I hadn't enjoyed such complexity, intrigue, and plot development with the progression of episodes and even the dialogues, until I was finally amazed by the behind-the-scenes events.
The story revolves around the 41-year-old Hiroshi Odokawa, an ordinary and reserved person who works as a taxi driver.
The anime features several different and diverse stories about completely different people, but the common factor among these characters is that they have all ridden in the same taxi. The themes intertwine and connect to the main question of the anime. The way each story and character connects with the whole was one of the strongest points of the anime, and the connection was very tightly knit. In my opinion, the dialogue is also one of the main strengths of the anime. The dialogues in this anime are captivating, and despite their length, you don't feel bored. Many scenes take place inside the taxi, and the strength of the written dialogue between the characters prevents you from feeling bored in any way; rather, many of the conversations were very engaging.
The characters are fascinating. There are several characters, and each one in the anime is explored based on their principles, reasons, and motivations. For example, there is a character with social media anxiety, a character with a gaming addiction, two people who work in radio, a singer, and a semi-bankrupt person who just wants to start a family, not to forget the main character Odokawa and his own past as well. One of the beautiful things about the anime is that it reviewed the characters through either their dialogues or their reactions, which makes you sympathize with some and understand others. But the best of them, in my opinion, was the story of the character Odokawa, which was excellent to the fullest extent.
Despite the different backgrounds and goals of each character, every small event, every passing conversation, and every decision made has a clear echo in the main story. The anime turns the details of daily life, comedic situations, and even ordinary conversations into effective elements within the crime and mystery plot, in a way that every thread is masterfully connected to the others. This ability to combine multiple stories without losing rhythm or confusing the viewer keeps the audience constantly engaged, trying to interpret the connections and understand how the different fates meet in "Odd Taxi." Each character, no matter how marginal they may seem, plays a central role in building the story's foundation. The ending reveals the work's brilliance in blending reality with mystery, and comedy with tension, in a very consistent and interesting way. And all of this exposition and interconnection was done in just 13 episodes..!
