What else is there to say about Kaguya-sama: Love is War that hasn't already been said? It is an incredible showcase of everything great the romcom genre has to offer. It has gut-busting comedy, snappy, tightly written dialogue, character exploration, progression of romance, fantastic production, amazingly fitting music...Need I go on? Of course, if you have already seen the first two seasons and are considering watching the third, you already knew that. The show's second season improved upon its predecessor, and the third season continues this trend. It is just as funny, heartfelt and charming, while continuing to grow and develop the cast of characters in meaningful ways. Speaking of the characters...
Love is War has my favorite cast of characters, period. Kaguya and Miyuki are a formidable couple, but the side characters really steal the show. Strong side characters who can stand on their own will prevent a show from feeling bland and repetitive due to too much focus being placed strictly on the main couple. And boy, do these characters keep things interesting. You know they are well written when you can place any two characters in a room together and expect a thoroughly entertaining interaction. Ishigami has to be my favorite character. Shocking, I know. His ability to not give a damn and do whatever he pleases is commendable and hilarious. Chika's naivety and fun-loving nature provides the chaos every group of friends needs. Miko is the rule-abiding force who keeps them in check, while simultaneously falling victim to Chika's playful schemes. Hayasaka is the brutally honest confidant who often acts as a stabilizer for Kaguya's unstable emotions. All of these characters are so effective in their roles and continue to grow and get their time to shine in the third season.
But what really separates the third season from the previous two is the progression between Kaguya and Miyuki. The last stretch of episodes are dedicated to spending more time with them, dissecting their thoughts and desires to confess and be together in a more intimate way than ever before. This heightened focus on drama and romance was handled extremely well and the payoff is euphoric. I will not spoil what that payoff is, but you can probably guess what I am referring to. I really can't praise this show enough. A-1 Pictures took an already exceptional manga, and somehow elevated it. The creativity and passion on display could almost bring you to tears. If you enjoyed the first two seasons, be prepared for more greatness. Love is War is a powerhouse in the genre and this season will leave you more satisfied than you could have possibly imagined.
