First thing I wanna say is that I used to hate on Demon Slayer many years ago and now I just wanna write a review to make order in my mind and to understand what I effectively like and don't like about it.
- This review will not be spoiler free
- It's included only the first season since I watched only that
PROS AND CONS
Colors (Pro)
I've decided to start watching Demon Slayer because every single time I was logging on Netflix, the first thing I saw was Demon Slayer. There were those bright colors that I personally love and maybe they're my favorite as well.
Locations (Pro)
I've loved all the locations, especially the "crowded" ones like cities or the HQ of the Demon Slayer Corps. A bit less the mountain ones because they were a bit too generical and I hope the next season will introduce new locations. The fact that they created things for their own world, like the crows as messengers, or simply the cat that brings back the syringes to the demon nurse, drives me crazy.
Charcters (Pro and Con)
The charcters design is just amazing, I alredy knew almost all the characters because I saw them somewhere and I've remembered them since. I'll talk in the "specific" only for the principal trio + Nezuko since I know almost nothing about the other characters. Tanjiro: "Classic" Shonen Jump protagonist which I like and don't care if it's the same concept readapted to the infinite, I'll always like a Luffy-like character. Nezuko: I don't know what to think about her honestly. I don't understand why she doesn't speak and why she looks way more childish after the transformation, but maybe is just a thought of mine. Zenitsu: At the start I didn't like him because he was screaming way too much and was a bit of annoying, but as the time passed I started to like him, he has the potential to be my favorite but I think this first season and I think many things will happen in the next ones. I see him as a mix of Sanji and Usopp (both from One Piece). Inosuke: He and Zenitsu are definitely the comedic part of the first season. I kinda like him but didn't see too much for the moment. Regarding other character I want to spend some words for the demons in general. I like the fact there are different breed of demons (like the spider ones), I feel like there will be no other breed but I hope to see some more to be honest. Another thing I like is that they don't work as a team even though they're are the same "race" and every one of them has a different personality like the ones who decided to follow Muzan and the ones who decided to live like humans, that demonstrate that no matter what you are, you can choose how to live.
Animations and Battle System (Pro)
Obviously the animations are a pro, who doesn't like an anime with a good animations. Even a newbie watcher would give 10 to an anime just for the animations that in Demon Slayer are near perfect. Only thing I didn't really like, as a matter of personal taste, is the CGI, even though there was really few of it I'll never like it probably. As for the battle system I found it very innovative since I've never seen (or I don't remember) something like the "Breathing Styles" in an anime or manga. I like the fact they doesn't use only elemental styles (Water, Flame, Thunder,...) but also something "casual" like the Insect Breathing or Beast Breathing. That said I hope Zenitsu will be stronger in the second season because I love the Thunder Breathing animations and for the best animations I'll give the award to the episode 19 (Tanjiro vs. 5th Moon).
Some other considerations (Pro and Con)
Pacing (Pro): It's amazing, episodes were literally flying, none of them was boring even if nothing happened. Nowadays is hard for me to watch an anime with the continuity I watched Demon Slayer. Organizations (Pro): I love the fact there are two different organization, each with its own hierarchy, one for Demon Slayers with the Pilasters and one for the Demon with the Moons. Dialogues (Con): The dialogues are pretty childish and lack depth, I hope they'll get better because they're the main source for characterizing a character. Tanjiro/Nezuko Relationship (Con): In the first episodes it was way worse than at the end, so maybe it'll get better with the next seasons, but I don't like at all their relationship. I don't even know how to explain that but I'm pretty sure I've seen other anime with this type of relationship and always annoyed me so much. OP/ED/OST (Pro): I love all of them. I already knew the OP and ED but not much familiar with the OST that are amazing as well, my favorite one is definitely "Kamado Tanjiro no Uta" which I saved on Spotify.
Final Considerations
Overall a good/great anime which I suggest to anyone who likes the genre, great animations and want to watch something entertaining. I wouldn't suggest it to the ones who search something deep or that talks about philosophy. I'm glad I've watched it and that it made me change my mind.
