I first got interested in this show after seeing some clips of the ending and thought huh, that looked awesome and put it into my backlog. But now that I watched it in full the only real thing I can say is... ok?
It's not a horrible show by any means but somewhere along the middle of the season the show just started to make me laugh for all the weird reasons. The dialogue between characters was a bit off, fight scenes were great until there was random pauses mid fight (I'm not referring to the staredowns), and then just a lore dump near the end which kind of ruined it for me.
So this just ended up being a fun watch for some gore and decent fights, but the plot somewhat plummets into a information dump by episode 12. If it wasn't for that, I would definatly score it alot higher.
I get that this show had 12 episodes but the characters were somewhat all over the place to me. When the reveal came that none of them really cared at the end and it was all a act was great but some of the characters just felt half assed when they changed their mind.
(Edit: with watching the movies it does make a bit more sense but its still stupid)
The twins were of course really annoying but thats more of a typical character trope of such a design rather than a fault in of itself, they did what they were made to do. It's kind of a shame that Itsuki got cucked into the sideline though. Itsuki best girl
Saya just got really fucking tiring nearing the end. I thought earlier in the series that she was neat, her songs to school were fun, her vibe was cool. But then she gets turned into a helpless amnesiac who turns into a sleeper agent once the hot rival arrives. ???
Also what the fuck was the dogs deal? ???
I did enjoy the soundtrack alot. I was even suprised by the opening since I recognised the starting snippet from somewhere else (must've been sampled I suppose) and the background tracks were mostly okay, although I wish one track simply dissapeared named "Tsutome". I kept laughing whenever this track came on because It just felt spammed every other episode.
I was also happy to see a dub when I opened the series up, got into the first 3 minutes and turned that shit straight off. Jesus christ Saya's dad sounded awful. The sub was fine though.
I thought the animation was quite lovely for this series, but I didint like when they jumped in quality when Saya fought her "dad", it weirdly enough ruined the immersion a bit. But there were also some weird parts with characters teleporting behind eachother randomly and ruining continuity but apart from that the visuals were pretty enjoyable.
And the end sequence with the rabbits is just iconic for its absurdity, its great. The monster designs were great. Any background which was not the school was great too. Having a cgi helicopter near the end was funny to see aswell. My only other complaint is the edgy red eye glows in the episodes; I wish they were more toned down or muted. Why not just keep her badass detailed red design for the whole show instead of paint bucketing her eyes and adding glow and calling it a day.
I feel like this could've used some effort in the second half. Either that or just more episodes. I was really into the plot until I just wasn't. If this moved in less of a direction of Saya being a sleeper agent I think i would've enjoyed it more. Hell I even liked the small twist of all of it being a act but having the main character switch personalities in 1 minute was a bit of a slap in the face.
Some of the reveals were nice though, with the only ones I cannot even think to remember is there being any cameras watching so I might've missed it. An explanation of what the Elder Barians even are would be nice. Why are they the way they are? Why was there a badass multiplying bunny at the end of the show, that came out of left field. However it's not really what would sell the show for me anyway - it would just be a nice addition to it to atleast explain it but i'm sure it will in the future installments.
TLDR plot and final thoughts -----------
Gang this show was pretty good not gonna lie, shitty way to end it with a lore dump though. Saya sort of reminds me of the tuturu girl from steins gate i forget her name. Whenever saya is having the little singalong to school.
