Code Geass is a magnificent anime that is incredibly psychologically, emotionally, philosophically and politically deep.
Lelouch is the best protagonist I have ever seen. He is extremely complex and morally grey as well as highly intelligent and in tune with his emotions. He belongs to the famous archetype of well-intentioned extremist, the very same as AOT’s Eren Yeager and Naruto’s Obito Uchiha, however he is definitely the prime example of it. His inner conflicts, psychological issues and emotional struggles are much more fleshed out than all other protagonists. You may not agree with his methods, however you definitely will sympathize with him throughout the series.
The story revolves around a singular multifaceted conflict deeply interwoven with all subplots. Each branch of the conflict is perfectly executed and works in extraordinary tandem with one another to bolster the overarching story. The producers tremendously reward those who pay attention, as every plotpoint naturally circulates back into the main story in unique ways, which leads to the series never reaching the point of dullness. Aside from the well-developed story, it is also extensively compact and defined by the quote “less is more”, as each and every part of the story is as compressed as possible whilst maintaining the utmost quality, which results in heavily intriguing and emotionally impactful story-arcs that constantly leave you at the edge of your seat.
The battles are essentially like chess and you will always be totally focused on the strategy, tactics and clashes of all factions. They will also frequently surprise you and keep you on your toes.
Moreover, Code Geass has an abundance of well-developed and three-dimensional secondary-main characters. Suzaku Kururugi, who is Lelouch’s primary philosophical opponent is a prime example of this, as he always brings his own unique perspective into the various issues, thinks for himself and suffers through his own emotional issues. There are numerous other high-quality characters such as C.C, Ohgi, Xingke, Schneizel etc, so you will definitely not be bored at all when the perspective shifts from Lelouch.
Beyond the excellent emotional story and worldbuilding, it is also very unique with its original mixture of fantasy and mecha. Lelouch's power of geass allows him to radically alter others minds and while it certainly comes in handy during political confrontations, it also heavily affects his emotional and psychological state as it leads to grave consequences and an immense internal conflict that will make you extremely invested in his character and likely shed tears for his sake too.
The conclusion is by far the best one ever made in anime. The whole series is an emotional rollercoaster and you will likely be left in tears by the heavily emotional yet perfectly satisfying conclusion.
