Review for the first season of clannad:
I started this anime like a week or two ago and for the first time in awhile ive had alot of thoughts about it that i also wanted to share so i decided to make a review. :D
The reason why i decided to finally start this anime is because ive been watching alot of romances over the course of the past year for influences for a story ive been working on and recently ive been really getting back into anime and ive had this on dvd for like two years or something like that.
I'd say the first few episodes were pretty rough, it definitely felt like it had alot of trouble starting up like for example everything with tomoyas dad was very few and far between and when there was moments with them it felt pretty out of nowhere and when tomoya would explain it in his inner monologue it felt very much like key the person behind the story of clannad didnt know how to actually establish tomoyas and his dads relationship. I know the anime is an adaptation of a vn and maybe the vn did it better but it didnt feel really natural at all even whilst knowing this is based of a vn where in which you wouldve spent alot of time hearing Tomoya's thoughts.
I think these issues expand overall to the first few episodes. They were enjoyable dont get me wrong, just very rough.
Once the anime finally started rolling though it was really good. I think everything with Fuko was insanely well done and I honestly can't think of any complaints. I guess it was pretty cheesy at times which you could definitely say about the whole show but I think it really suited this show and helped the story much more than it caused any problems. Fuko as a character was also insanely fun and also insanely interesting. I really loved this arc, especially its ending. I also love how even after this arc Fuko would still just randomly show up in the middle of a scene try and help and fail and then just fuck off.
The kotomi arc was also insanely good, she is for sure my favourite character in the show and i really loved her relationship with tomoya and how she kept hiding behind him whenever she met anyone and kept thinking they would bully her. The way this arc ended as well was super adorable and super funny. By far my favourite part of this arc though was kotomis backstory which I think was just so good and I can't wait to eventually rewatch this part of the show specifically.
I really loved the final arc as well. I think it really brought together everything that was built up throughout the show in a really good way minus the stuff with Tomoya's dad. I loved getting to know Nagisa's parents and their backstories especially her dad who was so funny and so goofy. I loved seeing everything with tomoyo as well with learning her backstory and finally getting to know her a bit more. She was always a great character from when we first met her in my opinion and insanely funny with how she was always beating the shit out of sunohara but she 100% came into her own during this arc even though only the first few episodes of it were about her. The ending of this arc was once again really well done with Nagisa's dad calling her out for being so stupid even if he didnt say it exactly with her mom and tomoya cheering for her as well even if it was a bit cheesy. And oh my god the scene where she started crying and you could hear all the over lines said throughout the episode was beautifully done man.
Overall I really liked this show, it gave off a ton of love chunibyo vibes to me which is probably cause of how influential this anime is so it probably influenced love chunibyo. It was super funny and the way they handled sunohara is by far my favourite type of best friend character in anime with them being treated like the complete and utter idiots they are. It's always so funny watching stuff go wrong with him. He's definitely not my favourite of this type of best friend character but definitely insanely well handled.
I think my only real complaint for clannad how tomoyas dad was handled with it rarely ever having anything to do with the story which is like fine but then when he is in the story he's just such a nothing character like i understand that he and tomoya never speaks which is fine but as a character himself you just see him drunk a few times and says the most nothing sentences. He's obviously an important character since without his relationship with tomoya the last arc wouldn't of been able to happen the way it did i just wish it was handled better. Maybe its still relevant in after story and is handled much better which I really hope it does but as for in this season I really dont think it's handled well at all.
