“This is the story about breaking a curse… A curse is something that must be broken. Or else you’ll be defeated by it.”
Jojolion is a story about doing whatever it takes to break a curse. It’s been around two weeks since I finished JoJolion, (Jojolion is also the second manga I have finished!!!) and I can’t stop thinking about it. Jojolion is very unique and it stands out for me. I’ve been a JoJo fan for about eight years now, and for some reason I put off reading this masterpiece.
JoJolion takes place in Morioh (2011, 120 years ahead of the prequel sbr), the town we all know and love from Part 4, Morioh of Jojo's bizarre adventure (Diamond is unbreakable). The story starts when a massive earthquake and tsunami hit the town. A girl named Yasuho Hirose finds a naked man buried in the ground. This man later takes the name Josuke and is eventually adopted by the Higashikata household. Josuke doesn’t know who he is or where he came from. Josuke goes through hell and back to figure out his true identity and eventually, discovers piece of it.
Everything about JoJolion feels so unique, especially the character designs (Rai, Tamaki, Yoshikage Kira, the entire Higashikata family). I feel like JoJolion is often dismissed and doesn’t receive the discussion and recognition it deserves (I feel it's on par if not better than part 7). It’s definitely a part that shouldn’t be overlooked saying Part 8 is the part of the jojos series would not be crazy take. JoJolion does so many things perfectly, like the concept of equivalent exchange and the relationship between Josuke and, his love with his savior, Yasuho. Not to mention I think the concept of Wonder of You is the most creative (like most stands in this part) and possibly the best stand concept in jojos. Not to mention I also, very liked Tooru and how him and Josuke are thematic opposites. Thinking that Araki wrote this masterpiece 30 years into his career feels pretty insane to me. I’ll definitely be rereading it in the future.
“I am your son. No matter where I go, or what era I live in, that`s something certain that I can believe in.. mom…”
Jojolion stayed with me long after I finished reading it, and I found myself constantly thinking about its character designs, stands, Jojolion has something very unique and I cant quite put my finger on it. At first I disliked Jojolions ending and felt the story felt “unfinshed”. However, after sitting on Jojolion for a bit I consider Jojolions ending to be near perfect and, is something I can compare to my own life as well. Life is not always going to be perfect and most of the time isnt. My take is that JoJolion is about identity and imperfection and accepting broken things as they are.
Goodbye again Morioh ;(
