This review is super biased, just saying; Overlord is my absolute favorite series.
Quick summary of the plot:
A magical bone-man accidentally takes over the world with his monster posse. Chaos ensues. They try to mitigate the chaos and basically find a way to belong in their new world. Political and battle-related shenanigans galore.
The opening, while not quite as catchy as the first season's, is really good and captures the atmosphere, tone and feel of the anime really well.
While I feel the first few scenes (with the introduction of a few characters that won't be relevant for a long, long time) were lost on pretty much everyone, it did set the tone for the rest of the anime.
The fights were once again animated beautifully, Madhouse did a great job on that. Lots of gore and horrifying deaths.
And Ainz freezing over a swamp lake just so he doesn't get his robes dirty is rad af.
There's the bit with the Lizardmen which have their own culture and such, who suddenly have a clash with the most overpowered group of freaks they've ever encountered, and there's Sebas saving his future wife. And finally. Demiurge has a fun little plan for E-Rantel that involves the Dark Warrior Momon and the Pleiades maids. YYYYESSSSSS.
It's too bad many of the more intricate details of the story in the novels are left out, and as such the anime lacks the depth that makes the novels (and to a lesser extent, the manga) such an absolute joy to read.
I love that Cocytus and Sebas had their time to shine, Mare got to show his more ruthless side and heck, we even got some lizard porn. Not to mention Shalltear being drunk and Albedo being lewd. What else could you possibly want?
The only improvements I could make to this anime would be to add those details I mentioned earlier. However, that would require a longer runtime and, as a result, a bigger budget. So since that idea goes pretty much out the window, this anime is about as good as it can be.
Conclusion: If you're looking for a good adventure anime with fun characters, incredible world-building and a premise not really explored before in anime, I highly, HIGHLY recommend this anime; it's an absolute delight.
Oh, and it has really good horror and gore scenes.
Uhm. Now I just need to fill this last bit of space.
