"Spy x Family" is the perfect show to turn on before bed for some cozy & cute vibes!
I'm quick to refer to this anime as "slice of life"; however, I have been corrected that it doesn't neatly fit into that box. I think of that genre, because we have the characters mostly going through daily life, the stakes feel relatively low, and the overall vibes episode to episode tend to air on the side of home, family, school, just trying to get used to a domestic situation.
But all of those vibes definitely gloss over the actual plot, where we have a parody of East and West Germany with increasingly rising tensions, and a spy whose mission is to try to maintain the peace between both nations. We have the secret police making people disappear, torture scenes, spy missions, bombs, assassinations, and more.
The more intense part of the plot consistently plays out throughout the entire series and is interesting in itself, but it's greatly overshadowed at times by some of the sillier aspects of the story, like, Twilight struggling to adjust to family life, Yor being absolutely hopeless in domestic qualities, Yuri being in love with his sister, and the fact that we have a telepathic child and a pet dog that can see the future.
There's a lot of duality in that regard, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it doesn't take itself seriously. It's just mostly a comedy set atop a more deeper plot. When I first began watching it, I was getting nostalgic for "Detective Conan", which I grew up with, but it is nowhere near as "mystery of the week". It stays relatively focused on the fact that we're trying to get close to Desmond, and while there are plenty of side quests, I don't feel like you ever forget his main goal.
Overall, I absolutely adore the family unit. I wasn't sure how much romance to expect nor did I expect to actually be rooting for Twilight and Yor to become an actual couple, but I'm actually obsessed with the idea of this being a slow-burn where they get together at the end, and I love the fact that it doesn't stop at just the main couple having secret identities, but also, Anya having a secret of her own.
I do wish they used Yor's assassin job more often. While there were a few episodes where it was central, I just feel as if it falls to the wayside a bit. We often just see it in terms of her abilities, like her being freakishly strong or taking a vantage point to try to find Anya. I'd love to see more of her actual work and the types of clients she has. I got subtle vibes that she airs on the side of clients from her own country, but I wasn't sure if she just took any contracts. There could be some more strife mixed in, almost adding in some 'enemies to lovers' themes if she primarily did work for the East. Despite that desire, I am glad she wasn't just a spy in the East. I enjoy that we have a spy, an assassin, secret police, and a variety of wheels that are all turning at the same time.
It's just a darling anime. There isn't too much to dislike about it. I always watch heavier, darker, and sadder anime first, then turn this on as a pick-me-up!
