Tired of romance with pointless drama? Not in the mood for frustrating love triangles? If so, this may be the show for you. I don't know about you guys, but day to day life can get pretty stressful sometimes. You and I Are Polar Opposites is one of those anime where you can sit down, relax, and have a fun time & feel good about what you just watched.
The story follows Miyu Suzuki, an outgoing girl with a bright personality. She's someone who sometimes worries about her image and what to say in order to best fit in with her peers. This is where her love interest, Yusuke Tani, comes into play. He has a more reserved personality, but he is someone who will say what is on his mind. It's almost like...they're polar opposites or something. Anyways, Tani's ability to say what he thinks & not concern himself too much with trying to perfectly fit in, is what causes Suzuki to fall in love with him. And guess what, she is fully willing to admit that to herself, her peers, & Tani...in the very first episode. Yeah, you heard me. There's no waiting around for them to get together. They are an established couple right from the beginning.
I can really appreciate a romance anime that skips over the "will they, won't they?" nonsense & gets right into the relationship. Don't get me wrong, I do also enjoy romance of the dramatic, slow-burn variety, but sometimes you just wanna watch a nice couple do cute couple shit without the drama, ya know? It is admittedly a very simple premise. The story & characters aren't exactly breaking any new ground. You won't get any emotional backstory to further flesh out the characters or anything like that. Thankfully, that is not needed at all to be invested in the characters. They are likable enough on their own.
Speaking of the characters, I really enjoyed the side characters in this show. I'm not gonna really take the time to discuss them in too much detail, but trust me when I say they are also very fun to watch. They have pretty distinct personalities, but one common trait they all share is their openness in supporting & encouraging each other. It is very wholesome to see such a positive friend group. Oh, & the budding romance between two of the side characters, Yamada & Nishi, is every bit as adorable & satisfying to watch as the main couple.
You and I Are Polar Opposites has such sweet, heart-warming portrayals of innocent high school romance. It is very enjoyable seeing these characters navigate their first romantic relationships together. Oh, & the comedy actually lands sometimes. I thought it was a lot funnier than your average romcom. I couldn't count how many times I smiled ear to ear while watching this show. It knows exactly what kinda show it is. It is very well-executed. I found myself in a better mood after each episode. If that is something that sounds appealing to you, then you should absolutely give it a watch!
