Great watch overall. It has rough spots, another reviewer said this has pacing issues, and they aren’t wrong. But it also has a decent story, decent character development, and mid to good fight sequences.
The fighting scenes and fluid animation in this series can either be a strength or weakness depending on your own personal preferences. It isn’t all traditional animation. A lot of CGI is used for most of the intense fights. And yes, it can kind of take you out of the moment. I personally have never been bothered by the judicious use of CGI. It still does a good job at conveying the right message. The fights are all still woven together well. Especially the first fight with the black dragon. Honestly it was the best part of the show.
Which sort of brings us to the pacing issues. This feels like a series that might never get another run. One which might never go beyond these 12 episodes. If it does, a lot of this might not matter. But as it stands, some of the best stuff is like 45% of the way into the show instead of building to a steady crescendo towards the end. Not a big deal for me personally. I can still appreciate what is here.
A lot of your own personal enjoyment of this is going to come down to whether or not you like this type of anime, or this type of main character. I am a sucker for OP protagonists in fantasy settings. I also appreciate that the character isn’t a degenerate or a lecherous pig. He is a fair and serious main character that I can empathize with. I’ve also been a sucker for redemption arcs that follow unfair betrayals.
There are several characters in here that feel like they get decent character development. Which is something to be proud of in only 12 episodes. Not just the main character either but some of the supporting cast. As you watch, it feels like the characters have motivation, some reason to continue what they are doing. They don’t simply feel lost in their own plot. The best part of this, beyond the initial black dragon fight. Is seeing the main character prove to himself and to others that he has value. He was cast aside by what were supposed to be his friends. And seeing him overcome this in a point of tension was a well done bit of story telling.
If you like this type of setting and character then you’ll probably be able to see past the shortcomings this piece has. The very worst parts of this anime are like a 60 out of 100. I’d say the very best parts are like an 83 out of 100. And probably overall I’d rate this a 75. Watch the trailer, if it pulls at you. There is enough meat on these bones to be worth the watch.
The character limit counter for this site appears to be savagely broken. We are well over 2,500 characters now and this brain dead piece of rot keeps saying "must be over 2100 characters". Do better. Honestly, you should be ashamed.
