Review (*minor spoilers)
It has become a new habit of mine to write down my personal thoughts for the shows I watch
Usually, when I encounter a truly great story, I find myself speechless, at a loss for words, heavily feeling the weight of the world closing its doors when the final episode ends. Secrets of the Silent Witch is one of those rare, deeply impactful experiences.
When I first started this series, my initial thought was to compare it to Bocchi the Rock!—another story I hold close to my heart as a 9.5/10 as the crown of music anime and what inspired me to take music and put in the effort. I thought
'Mitsuketa, bochi ga koko ni, betsu sekai ni iru to...'
found ya, bochi is here, in an another world...
But I quickly realized Monika is entirely her own person. While Bocchi exists in a relatively safe, light-hearted, drama-free environment (relatively), Monika's world is fundamentally about the heavy, painful, yet beautiful process of challenging yourself to change.
Going in, I expected a standard trope: an overpowered Sage disguising herself at the Serendia Academy to protect a price. At first glance, that didn't spark an immediate emotional hook. But the show proved me wrong. This twist of fate—forcing her back into a school environment—was exactly what Monika needed for her own soul. watching her slowly progress from being utterly incapable of saying a simple "thank you" to speaking up without stuttering filled me with an indescribable, quiet happiness.
I found myself relating to Monika on a profoundly personal level. Like her, I experience intense, all-or-nothing hyperfocus when something catches my interest (ironically this show). I overthink, i struggle immensely with social expectations, and i find a unique comfort in logic and numbers. the way the show uses mathematics—even simple arithmetic and theories— to define Monika's character is brilliant. She inherited this from her father, a man who spent his life trying to decode the human condition into an equation to cure illnesses. But beyond just logic, I deeply resonate with her earnest desire to return the kindness she receives. Watching her try so hard to give back to the people who were there for her—even when just being around others is terrifying—reminded me of my own wish to appreciate and connect with those who understand me.
The story highlights the beauty of logic, like when Monika calculates the Fibonacci sequence (the golden spiral that dictates nature itself) by reciting Uncle Sam's Pig rhymes in her head just to calm her anxiety. It is such a raw, realistic coping mechanism wrapped in a fantasy setting. Because of this logical foundation, her ability to cast un-chanted magic doesn't feel like a cheap trick; it feels like she took the impossible and decoded it.
This is not just a light-hearted fantasy; it has a real emotional gut-punch. It deals with ostracization, the trauma of her origins, and the resulting severe social anxiety. The twist involving
The production by Studio Gokumi is phenomenal, undoubtedly elevated by the collaboration between Aniplex and Kadokawa. Kimishima Ayano's comedic timing and Cona Nitanda's faithful character designs bring a distinct charm to Monika especially her adorable side. However, as someone who wants to know everything about this world, I have heard from Light Novel readers that certain details—like the deep worldbuilding of nobility and the preference for Felix over Cyril in the anime as few Cyril scenes—were left out. It makes me want to learn Japanese just to read the source material, to uncover the parts of the world the anime couldn't fit.
But if there is one thing that anchored me to this show, it was the music. The OST (composed by Yoshihisa Kato, Haruna Kubo, Takuya Ichihashi, and Rina Tayama) acts as the heartbeat of the series. I use soundtracks to slowly ease myself out of a fictional world, but this music keeps pulling me back in.
Tracks like Chinmoku no Majo perfectly capture the awe of her power, while Ippo fumi dasu (Taking a Step Forward) and Chousen, shitemiru (I'll Give It a Try) resonate with my own internal desire to step out of my comfort zone. When Oto san no Hon...! (Father's... book!) played in episode 13, it hit an emotional threshold I rarely reach in real life.
Secrets of the Silent Witch is a meticulously crafted story that respects the weight of personal growth. It makes me long for a reality where magic exists, but it also reminds me that finding your own unique path—even if you have to calculate it one number at a time—is its own kind of magic. Monika has easily become one of my top favourite characters of all time.
OST that changes often like serious, inspiring and suspense and silly fantasy theme and ofc silence when it needs it
I'll list the favourites of mine while others are good too but as a Background theme for to see with the show:
Yoshihisa Kato:
Rina Tayama:
Haruna Kubo:
By writing this review a task that was a high hurdle for me, I learnt about myself as well as the way to express my feelings for a show
Behold the scene in ep1 yourself, what can be said other than beauty itself
