If you like stories where the numbers get bigger, or are the type of person who played a little too much pokemon mystery dungeon as a kid and now thinks about animal transformation too much for normal society, you are probably gonna like this one.
This is probably THE best version of "watching my mc's stats and skills slowly get more extensive in a very easy to understand stat screen" type story i personally read. Not that that says a lot, a lot of these are bad, but it still says SOMETHING about the quality.
Youre also definitely in for a very physical descriptions of the experience of being a dragon. Illusia has paws, is a quadruped and his only way to carry his allies to safety is with his mouth, which WILL coat them in his dragon saliva. You won't forget that this is a story about a non human, its front and center. No wiggling out of it half way by having him spend most of his time transformed into a human either, despite his own pleas, he is a dragon.
Its not all animal tf heaven and stat screen indulgence though, the main character is a little too slow at making obvious connections to my liking, and he gets to be the unequivocal moral good a little too much. He doesnt really get to make all that many mistakes and grow from them, his character is a little too static, he mostly just learns new things which change the equation but never really messes up in any way that creates opportunities for growth. When he does something that he finds to stretch his morals, its always pretty damn excusable.
They also make him oblivious to the romantic advances from a certain 10 year old turned monster turned 13 year old, which just feels weird.
He doesnt really seem like the type to not see through whats happening there, so having him essentially turn into a different way more oblivious person the moment he is flirted with just seems strange, its pretty contrived for him to not notice. And thats ignoring the fact hes basically adopted that girl, just strange. It doesnt happen super frequently and only really crops up in the later Volumes, but if you cant ignore something like that i felt it pertinent to mention.
I do like the overall cast of characters. The start has some conflict that seems somewhat contrived, but once the second arc starts I feel the quality of the cast increases a good bit.
Maybe check out the manga first to see if you like it, currently it only covers up until the end of arc 2. The anime isnt all that good and doesn't really give the same feel as the novel or the manga, but if youve already got your teeth into it its not the worst experience, although definitely weaker than the LN or the Manga.
Overall, if you want a progression fantasy with steadily climbing stats, stakes and video game elements, all wrapped up as japanese furry propaganda, I'd say give this a try.
