This show is just amazing.
I originally had not intended to watch this back when it started in Fall 2018. However when my roommate was in stitches about it and I saw the latter half of episode one I knew skipping this show would be a huge mistake.
Rimuru is not your typical isekai protagonist. Yeah he falls for the normal quirks of the genre but does so out of irony, not because "the plot dictates that you now are super powerful". Yes he becomes an OP monster (literally) and can do whatever he wants. However the choices he makes are his own based on his will - not others.
The season goes through a few different phases of being a slow SoL kind of isekai following Rimuru and his rather eccentric followers around doing day to day things. Then the show always progresses smoothly into each new arc. Now each arc does seem to be a little rushed at times (particularly the last two). However being a anime only individual this only comes from others complaining about it.
What makes this show for me is its amazing animation and characters.
Animation wise this show is top notch. Nothing ever felt neglected or rushed. Fight scenes were clean and smooth with vivid colors and animation that complimented well and did distract you. Little details such as continuity of characters in the full frame of view was also nice to see. Rimuru (while in slime form) was so expressive and clearly the team had a ton of fun making new forms and faces for him.
Rimuru's VA was also amazing. Apparently she is new to the industry and I honestly never would of known. Speaking of sounds the music of the show was also really good. It captured moments really well and accented interactions without sounding forced. The OP and ED's for the season were also really good as well. I especially liked how OP1 and ED1 told a story of its own in the animation that could be stitched together.
Characters were another big selling point. The cast is full of eccentric and cute characters to get to know and see interact with Rimuru. From Shizu being super protective to the point of being yandere, to Milim being adorably deadly almost every base is covered in the central cast of the show. Even the male side is represented with Gabiru (who I am certain is Kazuma reincarnated again...) to Ranga (who is clearly best boi for the whole season), and more!
The story seems to piece itself together slowly over the season allowing us time to digest and enjoy everything we experience. While there is definitely climaxes for every arc the whole picture was still missing. It is definitely hinted at at various points of the show it really isn't the main focus. It is more of getting to know and understand everyone while continuing to explore the world.
With season 2 announced I am sure this is just the warm up for Rimuru and friends. I can't wait to see what other adventures of slime goes on and how the story progresses forward.
