# Summary Kaguya-sama:Love is War is about a student council in which the president and vice president have a battle of wits in order to make the other confess their to them while the rest of the student council and the school observe unaware. # Animation A-1 pictures delivers again with a very beautiful naturally flowing animation giving all of the characters interesting movements so that you do not become bored by watching them and enhancing the jokes in the series with sleek easily conveyed body language.
Score: 17/20
# Art Style While all of the characters look very beautiful their designs themselves i do find to be a bit lacking as especially with the female characters their designs tell you nothing about their actual character and more so just exist to make them cute. I think Miyuki ends with the best design for these reasons because the neatness of his hair and the way his eyes are drawn show him to be a serious and hard working guy before he even says a word.
The backgrounds are all beautiful and add a sense of life especially with any scene that takes place outdoors.
Score: 15/20
# Voice Acting (Japanese) All of the characters were given actors who almost perfectly fulfill their roles and this is best seen in Aoi Koga as Kaguya and Makoto Furukawa as Miyuki as they change their performance drastically to fit the large difference between the way both characters act vs how they actually think. The rest of the cast sadly do not have such contrasting sides to their personality for us to see if this would be the case for all their actors but I can’t actually fault the anime for that.
Score: 18/20 # Characters The characters are what really make the story as all the events are based on the way they interact with each other. That being said this anime absolutely benefits from this as all the characters are charming and work well together. This goes not only for the main characters but also for everyone else in the show as even Ishigami who doesn’t show up until halfway through the shows run is one of the most popular characters.
Score: 17/20
# Story The story follows a pretty straight forward pattern throughout most of the show where Miyuki and Kaguya are having a “battle” over something that has happened (usually a scheme pre-thought up by one of them to make the other confess). The events play out and the announcer says who won for the day. While this could’ve become repetitive each of the events are different enough to be engaging and the usual formula is broken more and more often by the later episodes.
Vague spoilers below:
Sadly Kaguya-sama does not break away from the current trend of not actually having an ending. While the standard formula is mostly strayed from by the end of the show the very last scene of the last episode plays out almost exactly like in the earlier episodes as if there was no real progress made with either of the main characters. This makes it feel like everything you just watched didn’t actually mean anything because it didn’t have a real impact on how things turn out at the end. Now I know that the manga is still running but this doesn’t excuse a thing. You shouldn’t have to read the manga to get a truly satisfying end to an anime. Hopefully, this kind of open-ended conclusion means we will be getting a season 2 but with no news yet I can only be disappointed by how things played out.
