This show was one of the first to take the already somewhat infamous Imouto genre, to the next level. The horny level. Once the anime community was notified of what this show was about, a very large number of people began investigating. To give some statistics: approximately 500,000 people have marked this show as complete on their anime lists as of 9/29/2020 (Numbers taken from myanimelist.net and anilist.co). To put that into perspective, this show has managed to get about a fourth of the attention that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has gotten, in about half of the time that it has taken FMA:B to gain its popularity.
Often times with shows that get a lot of attention, there are many conflicting opinions. But this... this FBI raid of a show, managed to do what has never been done before. It united the anime community. Eromanga Sensei managed to bring the anime community together, so that everyone could call it out for the dumpster fire that it is. I'm no anime historian, but in my opinion, this has been one of the only times where the overwhelming majority of the anime community managed to agree on something.
Whether it was intentional or not, this show did the impossible. As a result of the impossible being done, Eromanga Sensei has become a must watch for every consumer of anime out there, but not because it's a good show.
From a literary perspective, this show was somehow able to choke itself out with its own foot.
The shows characters are not done well, but instead they are done lazily:
As a result of these things, it makes it hard to care for any of the characters. It's challenging to care for a character that seems to be a different character every few episodes or so.
Even on top of how horribly the characters are treated by the writer, there are other factors that go into making Eromanga Sensei a bad anime such as:
(FOLLOWING IMAGES ARE NSFW.)
And lastly, the show is filled with awkward and displaced scenes like this:

~~(Note: All of these characters are ages 12-16 years old.)
When all of the listed elements above combine together to form an anime, the result is far from good. The people working on the show knew that the show was going to be called trash, and I think that may have inspired them to not pour everything they had into this show. As a result of a bunch of lazy works combined, the show turned out to be trashier then expected.
To sum it up: it's a bad show.
Absolutely! It's definitely a must watch. Whether you like it or not, whether you're a pedophile or an ecchi fan, it's become part of anime culture to make fun of this show for the hot mess that it is. Despite how uncomfortable the show may make you, once you fully experience the show, you will be in a perfect position to make fun of it as brutally as you'd like.
