I've been re-watching a couple episodes to find specific scenes, and I think this show deserves a better review. Since what sat previously in my note didn't really do the show justice.
A lot of people hating on this show, target it's obvious subplot. A dude who ends up liking his step-sister a little too much. Yep, it exists and it's a slight focus in the show, but I think if you put aside that there is a quality show underneath, if you're fine with a bit of fan-service tagging along with it.
This show is a comedy gold mine if you're fine with crude humor and some exaggerated comedy. I loved some of the scenes because it visually looks great, with reasonably detailed scenes and character models, and it even has some posters on the wall that have some great art on them. The bright visuals really adds to some of the funny scenes, and makes everything feel pretty upbeat. The OP/ED visually aren't mind-blowing, but they do have some fun songs to massively overcompensate. There's a reason they're in so many rhythm games and all over the internet. To add to this, the voice actors really put some work in to it too, and it feels like they had a good time with the show, but who knows. The background sound track doesn't stick out as anything special, but all of the music fit and helped set the scenes.
On-wards to the plot review. To start off, I don't think the plot is really anything special. I think it was just there to carry the comedy, which I was alright with. It didn't detract from the show really, but it gave it an avenue to deliver jokes, introduce characters well, and make them interact together in great ways. It ended up making the characters slightly develop off each other, especially Sagiri, and it did the show justice. On the other hand, some of the characters near the beginning start out as a tad annoying (mostly talking about Yamada), which did annoy me for the time. Thankfully, she got her own piece of development by the end. On top of this, it was the point of her character at first, so I'm not detracting too much. In a way it was a bit generic for a slice of life rom-com, but it was less about the plot and more about what surrounded it.
I really did enjoy it, but I don't like giving shows like this good reviews, because it does make it seem that it's alright to make them, which I don't like to give that impression. That might seem ironic coming from someone who has Monogatari near the top of his list, but that show is on another level of quality and writing/directing ingeniousness, to the point where I forgive it. This show feels like they took the idea and wrote the story around it, whereas Monogatari feels more like it was added in after.
