1) Full of spoilers
2) feel free to message me about it
So me, I started this manga in June 2020 by buying the first volume and ABSOLUTELY not knowing if I was going to like it, all I knew was that it was a popular manga and that its physical edition was expected.
With a very good first impressions, I rush to the volumes one by one, and I find myself, without realizing it in December at the end of the first part where an impression of emptiness seizes me. I have simply never experienced such involvement in a work of fiction (except for One Piece, Berserk and Attack on Titan). It is a masterfully mastered work. A master who knows where he is going from the start of the manga (One shot yogen no nayuta published in 2015, a sort of proto-CSM that strongly inspired the characters of Power and Nayuta). This story tells us the life of a poor guy, totally ruined and whose only friend is a chainsaw demon who will end up being the hero of the world by killing the gun demon, the presumably most powerful entity in CSM's lore.
Here, demons are not feared because they are strong, demons are strong because they are feared. This sentence sums up the last arcs of CSM beautifully.
This mastery goes first through his MC which evolves all the time, without inconsistencies or burrs (except for blood). At the very beginning we have a poor and indebted teenager like no other, whose only dream is to have a normal life and to be able to touch a girl before dying. By a most miraculous rescue from Pochita, his friend demon chainsaw, and Makima his goddess who allowed him to come out of this hole of despair. After having known a broken paradise and a love as fleeting as an explosion. Our friend finds himself tired, tired of making choices, tired of losing, tired of this bitch of life. He will return to his goddess so that he can escape it all. But a god, even a redeemer, takes us through the confession of crimes box. Which brings us to the climax of this first part. Denji's transformation into Chainsaw man. True living god who can absolutely make everything he eats disappear. Thinking to be alone in the world, he lashes out in the name of Makima. But, in reality, it's quite the opposite, Chainsaw man has never been so popular, Denji has never been so popular. This news allows him to bounce back and break free from his condition towards Makima, those same devotions that nearly lost him and killed Power. The manga therefore ends with a real feast which can be summed up in "what does not kill you makes you stronger".
The formidable, the foolproof elegance, I named Makima. As said previously Makima is thus the savior of denji and his first love (
Then, graphically, it is always so impeccable, nothing more to say. The movements are clear, magnificent double pages dot the manga and the graphic peak is reached when entering the world of the demon of darkness. We only have the ambience handled wonderfully, but the designs that accompany it are equally impressive. This is great art. The biggest highlight, besides the simply excellent facial expressions, are the charadesign. Whether it is the dark demon, the gun demon or even just chainsaw man v1 and v2, it's magnificent. I can't wait how MAPPA will do this to us. With the 3D done on SNK, it could really very well be given.
In short, Chainsaw Man is a work to read urgently. It shines through these characters, their writings and their developments. But it also shines with these mechanics that I find innovative. But it also shines with these mechanics that I find innovative (the greater the fear generated by a demon, the stronger the demon). My biggest discovery of recent years.
