Despite starting as a decent horror-mystery, this show soon went downhill and at the end of the day was nothing more than a glorified gore show. I don't mind gore when its done right, but this show used the gore and countless death as nothing more than shock value. The deaths had no impact in the long run, and even when some reactions were shown in response to some of the deceased, it was overblown beyond words. As i sit after completing the show and look back on it, was there even a need of 12 episodes? The answer is no. There was hardly any character development and most of the deaths that we saw occur didn't really add much to the mystery. I'll mention some things that i did like about the show. Mei is an interesting character, and by far the most sane in the show by her reactions even if at first she came across as nothing more than a creepy ghost girl. She was the only source of genuine creepy atmosphere, and later when we learned that she was in fact alive, she didn't change her personality much. She was the only character consistent in her action and words. Her and sakakibara's friendship was good as well. And back to the mystery, the actual twist at the end wasn't half bad, i didn't expect it to be reiko. But with plot holes attached to even that reveal, i can't say that it was anything better than average.
As for the other characters, i couldn't care less about what happened to them. I was given no feature to empathize with them. They for most part were nothing but selfish bullies. And at the end showed how vile they are. To be honest we didn't get to even know half of the characters mentioned, so when i saw them trying to go after misaki i couldn't care less about what happened to them. The last 2 episodes actually dropped the ball with the quality, i hated the characters so much. They wouldn't talk to each other and would make dumb mistakes like any other horror show. Sakakibara is just not an interesting mc to follow, he did show signs of a good character at first with his suspicion and inquisitive nature at first, but soon he also caught the worm of stupidity. His actions in the later half of the show are just so questionable.
Well, at least the visuals and audio are decent. The character designs may not be the most special, but they do work. The only one with an interesting character model was misaki mei. I liked her doll eye. The show is shot well, some drawn out shots and change of angles even during the conversations made the show a lot better to look at. The op is genuinely good and it's creepy, definitely fit the vibe the show had aimed for (even if it didn't reach as a whole package). The ed has some good vocals, but overall it was quite forgettable. And i thought, a piano ballad didn't actually fit as except mei and sakakibara, very few characters showed actual sadness over the incidents and they were never close. [SCORE: 4.9/10]
