There is only one way I can describe this title. Disturbing. Now, I'm no stranger to ecchi, hentai or doujinshi. And I'm well aware that there are plenty of works that deal with disturbing themes, overly sexualized works, and works that have an overall lewd way they present themselves. And there are plenty of works that push those notions to the extreme. And while I can dislike many of them, I don't really get bothered. Well, this one touched a nerve, it seems.
But let me try and explain what I mean. This title talks about many dark and unsettling things. Which in itself is not a problem, if anything I welcome works that raise uncomfortable questions and go beyond the tried and true anime themes. To give you some context, the show opens up with a 3 minute long scene of the female lead, on her 16th(?) birthday, having her pictures taken by her father. That is full nude pictures, making her pose in suggestive ways, while slobbering over it like a horny teenager. After that the show takes a brisk walk down the unnerving boulevard, touching on on things like suicide, denial of freedom, both in physical and mental form, rape, broken family, sexual attraction to minors and incest, kidnapping, manslaughter and attempted murder. Now, as I've said, I don't actually have a problem the topics themselves, quiet the opposite.
But my first major gripe with the title is it's dismissive attitude to the topics. It mostly mentions things in passing and tries to play it off as not that big of a deal, almost like it's fine, and ultimately you should not be worried much. It's quick to leave most of those threads alone, and mainly focuses on the big one, which is the father daughter relationship. The general tone of that thread is "That's not how it should be, you need to stop", instead of "Holy fuck, stop that immediately!". It's as if we're not talking about CP and rape, but instead in a quirky teen rom com, and the MC is being a bit overbearing.
Now, the tone, while jarring, is not that big of a deal. And we're all familiar with bad/cliché writing. Normally I would of simply dropped the title. Or maybe finished it, slapped it with a low score and moved on. Well, there's more, obviously. But there is the lewd overtone on top of all that. You know which one I'm talking about. It's not the type of ecchi that just shows erotic things normally left out, in a playful manner. Not even the type that would contrive unbelievable scenarios to show off some pin-up like poses or costumes.
It's the type that actively revels in what it's doing. The type of show that would turn a normal conversation in to something sexual, simply by drawing lewd camera angles, even when nobody "in character" has that sort of view. The type of show that would linger on risky areas and zoom in, just to show off more. It's a type of show that is fully aware of what it's doing. And that's the problem. Normally, I don't really care about that. But I find it absolutely disgusting, once you factor in the themes of the show and the dismissive attitude.
I've mentioned the opening sequence, right? Now imagine the camera work in that, frankly, already disturbing scene. Sleazily sliding up and down the naked body of a clearly underage girl, in a horrible and uncomfortable situation. Pausing in opportune areas, as if expecting you to enjoy the show.
I'm not here to lecture anyone on the morality or what's good or bad, I just wanted to share my experience. I'm not going to deny, this show shook me. Not by the power of it's writing, but sheer disregard of morality. Not by actions or words of any one character, but by the overall message of the show. It's not something I will forget any time soon.
Did I like the show? Absolutely not. Did I hate it? I don't think so. Was it disturbing? More than any other title I've ever watched.
