1-Nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla. Wow.
To be honest, I don't think I've ever read something this good, now while I don't have a lot of completed manga under my belt. This is definitely the absolute best thing I've read. At the time of writing this review (02/22/2021) I have a total of 9 re-reads. Now this is crucial for being able to analyze the manga to its limits, and definitely helped me in writing this review.
I found this masterpiece while I was browsing manga to read, though of course as foolish as I had been, I forgot to filter by genres, but that helped me in every single way. Now let's say if I had actually filtered. I couldn't possibly have found this work of art.
As intrigued as I was, you could say I was a fool, I wasn't expecting to read the single best manga of my life. That night I had planned to read my average Crossdressing + Romance manga, but reading this really changed my life.
In just the first chapter, we get told the ending already. 4 panels, first we see Gorilla bumping his chest, then in the last panel. "I will die tomorrow."
Absolutely heartbreaking, though, I thought there could've been a slight chance at a comeback, this was all just a practical joke by both Gorilla and the author. But no.
Tears. Tears just started flowing out of my eyes. Heavy streams, you could fill an entire ocean with my tears at this point. Just because of the second chapter. Such raw emotion was poured into this, and puts other manga endings to shame. It's so beautifully crafted, it's like every single line Ishida drew says an entire story. I have deeply analyzed the entire thing in my 9 re-reads,
Ishida Sui is typically known for creating Tokyo Ghoul, and while I have to admit, the Tokyo Ghoul manga is actually really good, it doesn't even come close to 1-Nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla, I'm not sure what made Ishida draw this, though I'm sure it must've taken him at least a few months, if not years, to come up with this incredible storyline, and the artwork too. Every page of this feels like I'm being transported into the manga itself.
Though what confused me heavily, was the 3rd, uncalled for chapter. As we all know by now 1-Nichi Go ni Shinu Gorilla, is 2 chapters long, but shortly after the 2nd chapter had released. An alternative ending was released. In the first ending, we can sadly see Gorilla laying there, dead, and it's just that. However, in the alternative ending, we can see that Gorilla had acquired a banana before dying. Which makes it a bit more of a happy ending, as we, the readers, know and understand that he at least died doing what he loved, eating banana.
All in all, this is a great, and lovely piece of fiction, and should definitely be crowned as the best manga of all time.
