The Spearhead survivors of the first cour, presumed dead by the Republic, are found by patrols of the neighbouring Federacy and offered citizenship in a country that doesn't categorize their lives as inhuman. Shin and the rest sign on, recover, and discover within months that they cannot stop fighting. Frederica — a Federal child of unusual eyesight and intuition — adopts Shin's unit. Lena, on the other side of the front, is alive and remains in the Republic, eventually breaking out to find Shin again. The cour ends with the front line moving back inside Empire territory and the cost of finishing the Legion war becoming clear.
