Haruka Nanase has spent his life finding ways to be inside water, and the four boys who used to swim with him at elementary school relay meets — gentle Makoto, energetic Nagisa, and rival Rin — have not been in a pool together since their grade-school championship years. Rin reappears at the start of high school as a foreign-trained competitive swimmer with a chip on his shoulder. Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa rebuild a swim club at their small school Iwatobi, drag in butterfly hopeful Rei, and start training back toward the meet that will eventually put all four of them in lanes next to Rin again.
