A girl named Bulma is on a road trip through a fantasy version of rural Asia hunting for the seven Dragon Balls — magical artifacts that grant a single wish to whoever collects them all — when her car breaks down outside the cabin of a tail-having forest child named Son Goku. Goku is preternaturally strong, owns one of the Dragon Balls, and has no idea what a girl is. Bulma talks him into joining her search. Their road trip becomes a martial-arts tour: Master Roshi the lecherous turtle hermit, the prickly disciple Krillin, the King Piccolo lineage, and the World Martial Arts Tournament in which all of them eventually compete.
