Five families of mages have been quietly murdering each other in the city of Fuyuki every sixty years, summoning legendary heroes from history to fight for the right to wish on the Holy Grail. Shirou Emiya inherited a half-finished magical education from his adoptive father and the kind of suicidal honour code that mostly gets people killed. He stumbles into the fifth Grail War by accident and summons Saber — a king he does not recognize and who would prefer not to explain herself. The series follows his alliance with classmate Rin Tohsaka, the rival Masters lining up behind them, and the wish Shirou eventually has to refuse.
